Default Sanada Seijirou

Name: Sanada Seijirou
Age: 23
Sex: Male
Height: 6'5

Character Type: Shinobi

Country/Village: Fire Country / Hidden Leaf Village
Rank: Jounin
Division: Team Sensei - Konoha Genin Team #4

Physical Description & Clothing: 6’5 tall, perfectly toned body, refined facial traits, fair skin and short black hair. Those are the main features of Sanada Seijirou – features which, of course, are anything but uncommon among his fellow clan members. But it is to his older brother Genjiro that he is most often compared; a comparison which he is quick to play down despite the many apparent similarities. For one, unlike his brother’s stare which is invariably empty and distant, Seijirou’s eyes at least show some sort of emotion at times – even if, admittedly, those occasions are quite rare. Indeed, he always gives the impression of being bored to death as he burns cigarette after cigarette.

Not one to be particularly picky about the clothes he wears, Seijirou generally dons the Konoha Jounin outfit – black pants, flak jacket, gloves, sandals, etc. The only exception is that he doesn’t wear his Leaf forehead protector, but he nonetheless keeps it in one of his pockets at all times. Over this whole attire, he also wears a large cloak/cape - its colour varying according to his mood. The type of clothes he wears when he isn’t on duty varies widely, even though they are predominantly made of dark coloured fabric. A personal preference which has nothing to do with his family traditions, Seijirou points out.

Personality: The most distinct personality trait of Sanada Seijirou would without a doubt be his capacity to retain his cool and composure regardless of circumstances – until now, no amount of taunts or emotional stress has been able to perturb him. He always remained his normal self, that is a confident – some would go as far as saying arrogant – young man with an inclination for sarcasm and mild provocation. And while this particular aspect of his character is repulsive for some, the fact that he isn’t the type to get annoyed easily is what earned him others’ sympathy.

There is this constant nonchalance about him which adds to his apparent air of indifference towards others. I say apparent, of course, because his attitude is just a façade to conceal any real emotion he feels – you really didn’t think he was devoid of them, did you? Whether it is a question of pride or something entirely different, Seijirou believes that letting real feelings transpire can only be a weakness. But deep inside, there is absolutely no doubt about his commitment to those dear to him, even if perhaps, he may not show his affection the way most people would.

Nindo; "Way of the Ninja": “Do people even need that kind of crap?”

Biography: Yuuhime Haruko was one of the few people in Konoha who regularly visited the Sanada estate, thanks to her friendship with Sanada Makiko. She had been here so often that she knew almost everyone in the family; in fact, she might as well have been considered part of the family. Makiko even occasionally joked about the possibility of Haruko marrying one of her cousins to make it official. But there was only one with whom she could envisage this to happen.

“Seijirou-chan!” Makiko’s sudden exclamation almost made her heart stop. She quickly realized that her friends had merely spotted her favourite cousin and before she knew it, Haruko found herself being pulled by the arm. The young man didn’t seem as thrilled with the encounter as Makiko was, but both girls knew him well enough to know he always acted that way. He nodded indistinctly before tucking a cigarette between his lips. “Enjoying the free tour today?” he casually asked Haruko. “More than usual for some reason.” For a moment, she feared she had betrayed herself with this subtle implications. Seijirou of course acted normally, but that didn’t mean anything. So she quickly added: “I have the honour to talk to the clan heir, after all.”

“I think you meant to say ‘clan spare’, sweetheart.” The answer was yet another example of the young master’s brutal sarcasm, and again it was impossible to tell how he really felt about this matter at that moment.

It might have been a harsh thing to say, but it was nonetheless accurate. For all his life, Seijirou had been second choice in the eyes of his family, a spare.

It was five years after the disappearance of his brother, when all hope of recovering the latter was abandoned, that he was born. The family needed a replacement, right? When he was two, the unthinkable happened. Genjiro was found and the hierarchy was reshuffled once more – Seijirou was relegated from clan heir to the role of fifth wheel again. Such circumstances may have occasioned rifts within the family, but there were no such things in this case. Some say it was because Seijirou was too young to trouble himself with clan politics. Personally, I think his age wouldn’t have made any difference; it just wasn’t in his nature to care about trivialities relating to birthright or inheritance. He didn’t particularly envy his brother for the attention he got, for being the one carrying all expectations. He never felt jealousy – or if he did, he hid it extremely well – nor did he hold any grudge towards Genjiro. After all, what could he have done about it? He could only accept those events as the vicissitudes of life.

As years passed and both him and Genjiro grew older, the gap between them became more and more noticeable. It had taken him a considerably longer time to learn how to properly control his bloodline. It was at the age of eight that he first managed to use the clan abilities, when by the age of seven, his brother had already been beyond that level. Yet, he was never disturbed by this contrast, nor did he allow himself to be discouraged. There were other ways to become a good shinobi; and Seijirou had since long decided he’d become a fine ninja using his own methods, his own strength – and not just his clan’s.

As a Genin, he was excellent, even if by his family’s and brother’s standards, it was nothing out of the ordinary. Everyone just looked at the fact that he only became Chuunin at the age of fifteen, as compared to Genjiro’s twelve – ignoring that the sole reason he didn’t make it earlier was the obstinate decision of his Jounin teacher to wait several years before registering his team. For their first participation, Seijirou and his two teammates literally breezed through the rounds, Seijirou capping the exams with a promotion earned via a brilliant display of control in the tournament. What made it even more impressive was that he came out unscathed from the whole examination. But once more, noone in his family really thought much of it, except maybe his mother and his cousin Makiko. It was the least that was expected from him, after all. The older brother had done it already – so Seijirou’s feat wasn’t so special when you considered it.

Yet, the boy still didn’t care – he wasn’t the type to crave for praise from his father or anyone else. As long as he knew he was doing things his own way and succeeding at that, it was all that mattered. He didn’t have any real dreams, any ambitions – he just lived the way he wanted with no one telling him how to act or behave. And he loved it. That was his idea of a good life. Eventually, after over six years of service as Chuunin – mission after mission, success after success – he was finally made Jounin. Already, his capacity to think critically under pressure, his imperturbable calm and composure – qualities most of his clan mates didn’t even know him to possess – had made him relatively famous in Konoha. So you see, he didn’t exactly need any sort of praise or acknowledgement from the Sanada to be a successful person. Who cared what kind of expectations they had anyway? He wouldn’t go out of his way to satisfy them. What was the use of that? A pat on the back from daddy? Nah, he liked things the way they were.

Then came the latest major event in his life and that of his family: the defection of his brother who, many were quick to admit after he had left, had never showed any signs of loyalty either to his clan or to Konoha. Seijirou didn’t say anything on the matter, despite being the last person to have ‘talked’ to Genjiro. Two days before the fateful day, a conversation almost degenerated into an altercation (the first and only one they ever had) between the two brothers – Makiko walking in just as Genjiro slashed Seijirou across the cheek, and avoiding what she said could have been another tragedy.

The topic of the conversation remains a mystery still, Seijirou acting his normal self as usual, as if the incident hadn’t even occurred. Neither the finger pointing and gossip nor the loss of a close family member (not that they were really intimate) seemed to have any effect on him, when he was at least expected to show some kind of resentment towards the one branded a traitor. All along, he kept acting with his characteristic nonchalance and composure. When asked recently whether he would have the guts to kill his own brother for Konoha if he were presented the chance, he merely replied with one of his trademark retorts.

“Sorry, I don’t answer trick questions. Besides, it’s not my job to catch missing-nins; I’m just asked to babysit kids.”

Recent Developments:
- Seijirou is leading Konoha Team #4, which is made up of the Saitsuki siblings - Toosu and Yori - and Nara Hitomi.
- Seijirou has somehow accepted his responsibilities (or at least part of them) as the future leader of the Sanada Clan, but insists he will not change his usual ways for this sake.
- He is currently monitoring a delicate situation involving rumours about a possible resurgence of his presumed dead uncle Masakage. So far, within the clan, only his cousins Shin and Makiko have been informed of this possible threat.

Sanada Makiko: Makiko is Seijirou’s bubbly, ‘spazzy’ and hyperactive cousin. She is possibly the closest person to the clan heir (relatively speaking, of course) at the moment, having grown up with him. Makiko, a Jounin of Konohagakure, often acts as proctor for selection tests such as the Chuunin Exams. Age: 22. Height: 6’0

Yuuhime Haruko: Haruko, Makiko’s best friend, is a close acquaintance of Seijirou. The real nature of their relationship, however, remains unknown – with some people sometimes mistaking them for a couple. Although one thing is certain: she is intimate enough with Seijirou to openly criticise his, often inappropriate, behaviour. Haruko is a Jounin of Konohagakure and leads a Genin squad. Age: 22. Height: 5’5

Sanada Genjiro: Genjiro, also known as Yamimaru, is Seijirou’s older brother. Relations between the two siblings have, however, been poor over the years – but only once did things nearly degenerate into violence. The reason behind the argument is known only to these two. Genjiro, former Jounin of Konohagakure, is now a wanted missing-nin. He was surprisingly last sighted a few miles off the Leaf Village. His current activities and objectives remain unknown.
