Default Rain Genin - Satake Koru

Satake Koru

Age: Fifteen
Sex: Male
Height: 5'7"

Character Type: Shinobi
Country/Village: Ame no Kuni | Amegakure
Division: Not Applicable

Physical Description and Clothing:
Koru looks typical for his age. He's thin, a little on the lanky side. His hands are calloused from long days of chores and rigorous training--several little scars and nicks from day to day shinobi life have kissed his skin. Despite his lanky, even awkward composure, wiry muscles still run the course of his body. He's quite strong, despite his weak looks. He carries something of a childlike grace as he walks, swinging his arms slightly and bouncing to the curvature of every step.

The face of Koru is quite angular and pale. It looks small because of his deep chesnut colored eyes and the careless waves of hair that rest upon his head. His hair is carefully groomed, depite it's messy look. The light brown locks come down just past his ears. He's got a few peircings on his ears, most of which he's done himself. His mouth is widely set and full of pretty pearly whites--he likes to show them off with a big, mischievious smile. His hitai-ate is usually left slung around the neck.

On the times when Koru is not training or doing work, he's got a real flair for clothing. He especially likes snazzy shoes and track suits, adorning them often. He also has an olive green jacket that he wears everywhere he goes-- He thinks it's quite stylish with its high collar and ornate sleeves. He owns a leather satchel that he likes to sling across his shoulder. He does wear weights around his ankles at all times, each at about fifteen pounds of weight. When he happens to be training (or perhaps on a mission), Koru can be seen in more pragmatic clothing. Usually just a sleevless shirt and black pants suffice.

Koru's got some color to him, that's for sure. He takes a great interest in all things art related, from music and painting, to theatrical performances. He's quite adept at a few traditional intruments, thanks to his parents. Whenever he can he spends time painting or drawing with pastels; he especially likes mediums that are messy and vibrant in color. He loves listening to music, especially if he is fortunate enough to hear it live. Koru is quite outgoing and gregarious, always ready with a smile and a laugh. He has no trouble aproaching people, and his charisma allows him to meet some incredibly interesting figures as well as making him a good conversationalist. At social gatherings, he does not often fade into the background, but rather blooms with the mirth and gaiety of jovial situations.

He does, however, have a bit of an ego. He sometimes tends to think that he is smarter than the average fiffteen year old, and because of this will unconsiously speak in a condesending tone to his fellow genin. He does try to keep this in check (especially around the higher ups), and he grits his teeth and bears it when his teammates say or do something he finds to be silly or brainless. He's also quite competitive and will always rise to a challenge. He hates to be put down and hates to be second best when he feels as though he could do better. Koru isn't a sore loser however: if someone deserves the first place, then he will gladly hand it over. His ego also comes in the form of great pride and sense of nationality to Amegakure, which has been deeply ingrained in him by his father. He is proud that the world now knows of the villages existance, and eager to do his part in helping Amegakure move forwards.

All that being said, Koru does his best to think a situation through and come up with the best possible solution. He is tactical and capable of coming up with simple strategies. His observational skills are a work in progress-- he often has to remind himself to be aware of voice inflection and body language, useful skills as a shinobi. He can be quite reckless and brash at times, a testament to his adolescense, and thus will occaionally make slight errors in judgement.

Because of his competitiveness, Koru is always looking for ways to improve himself. He spends much time doing this first and foremost; whether it's physically training his body, reading a book, working on his tactical prowess, or simply drawing, he always has something on the go. His motto is to always keep going, to always keep moving forward with life, and he does just that. There are few times that Koru stops to take a breath, but when he does, a more introspective side of him is shown.

The quieter side of Koru only emerges when he's spending time on his own. He's very meditative. He could spend hours lying on his bed and staring at the ceiling or looking out his window at the artifical light and the dank city below him. He is sometimes seen wandering through sectors or the more used and known canals; he likes to walk and think. He believes is helps fester his more creative side. He may at times toss a question of moral aptitude into a group of people to see the different reactions as well to gather more knowledge on the question that may be eating at his own mind.

Nindo; "Way of the Ninja":"You put one foot in front of the other, and you keep going, you keep walking until you can no longer walk."

Keen Eyes
Blessed with remarkable eyesight, there is nothing that gets by the user. Their power of sight, whether or not it is 20/20, is sharper than most. They have a knack for finding whatever they happen to be looking for, and no detail, no matter how small, slips by them. It takes them only moments to find whatever it is they’re looking for, and if they do not see it they can say with confidence that it is not there—or just hidden very well. This can be as simple as finding keys in a messy room or impressive as picking out a face in a crowded square.

Koru was born in relatively peaceful times, being the offspring of one shinobi and one non-shinobi. His father was an upstanding chuunin, a boisterous man filled with dedication and devotion to his country and most of all, to Tanomoshi Ishimaru. His mother was a simple woman living with her parents and four sisters in Sector One. It was her inexhaustible beauty and vibrancy that caught his eye, and through a love of music, they formed a mutual level of romantic interest in one another. And thus, without all the technical terms and rituals, they were married and Koru was born.

Not long after his birth, Koru's father relocated the new and starry eyed family to Sector Three, so that he could be closer to his work and the training grounds. It would be beneficial later, he hoped, when Koru was ready to attend the academy. He worried though, as the boy progressed in age and still continued to show no sign of chakra manipulation or talent for the shinobi arts. In a desperate attempt, Koru's father began teaching him the basics of a foot fighting style around the age of seven. He also began teaching him about chakra, running him through different exercises in the hope that this would encourage the development of another ninja in the family.

He hoped right, because soon after Koru turned eight, he showed his first signs of chakra manipulation: little ripples in puddles and a slight lifting of the water, as if a drop had fallen and made a splash. His father wasted absolutely no time time enrolling him in the Shinobi Academy.

The next few years were filled with hard work for Koru. There were struggles, failures, and successes. His father pushed him, always pushed him. He had to do better, be stronger. He kept teaching Koru the way of the Bloodstained Footsteps; the training and immense dedication needed for his improvement sometimes interfered with his other studies, and thus he lacked some of the chakra control that other students his age had. He made up for his lack of skill with fearsome strength for such a small body, and a deep seated pride in his village and in his country. The boy also developed into a social butterfly during his years there-- he flitted easily from one clique to another, his smile and charming laugh leading him the whole way.

A good way into what would have been Koru's final year in the academy (he would have been eleven at the time), his mother became very ill. She was bedridden most days, and the ones that she was not, she was too weak to go anywhere. Koru's father being gone often, the responsibility fell on him to look after her. He missed many days of classes, and did menial chores around the house, fetched supplies and various medicines. He offered his mother many times the help of a medical shinobi, and each time she waved her hand in a non-sensical way, muttering something about ninja magic and "just a flu.". He held her hand and stayed by her till the moment she died, and he later found out that it was cancerous tumors that had been the cause of her death. His father wasn't present for her funeral.

Koru never blamed him though. He knew the demanding life of a shinobi and was now prepared more than ever before to live the life that had been set out before him. The academy teachers didn't believe so however, and they held him back due to 'emotional instability' and the fact that he had missed so many teachings. He was upset at not being able to graduate with some of his friends, but nevertheless he sucked it up and worked voraciously to catch up, to be on par with the kids that were ready to take the next step in their career.

A year after his mother's death, Koru was finally able to take the genin examination. He showed an impressive display of taijutsu, though his ninjutsu and genjutsu abilities at that time were lacking somewhat. He showed that he was able to perform the basics however, and they let him through and granted him a hitai-ate all his own.

It was merely months after that his father came back from a mission with severe spine trauma and lower body retardation from the waist down. His days as both a shinobi and a celebrated foot fighter were over. The medic on the team had done the best he could, and with the help of a walking stick, the disgruntled ex-shinobi was able to hobble around the bottom floor of their home as well as take short walks, namely from the kitchen to the living room.

Koru continued his training primarily on his own, only occaionally taking instruction from his father who, though unable to show him, was able to help him correct his technique. He spent many hours jumping from rooftop to rooftop, balancing on fences or doing flips off of benches and poles. Anything that looked stable enough became Koru's playground, and he grew to learn the sector from the inside out. When he had exhausted training areas in his own sector, he wandered through the canals to others, found new and interesting places to practise his balance, flips, and technique. He only once ventured into Sector Two, and was quickly chased out by some thugs after he had startled them by leaping over a fence into a dank alleyway. The experience was enough to keep him away then.

A little more than a year ago, the Amekage mysteriously died. His father was stricken deeply, a grieved the loss almost as much as he grieved the loss of his lovely wife. Koru was not as taken aback by the loss of the great leader, because of his youth and inexperience in that area. He however welcomed the new, younger Amekage eagerly. He connected well with her youth, her being only a few years older than himself. He also felt inspired by her, the way one so young could rise to such a high level of esteem.

Koru wanted desperately to attend the most recent chuunin exams that took place, feeling that he was ready not only to prove his own worth, but the worth of the country as a whole. He was unfortunately not a part of a genin team at that point, and his father plainly pointed out that his techniques were not yet up to par with some of the more experienced genin. He envied those who were fortunate enough to go.

Now that Amegakure is making the move into the upper world once again, Koru is restless. He wants to watch the walls rise up with his own eyes, wants to watch the would world stutter in awe at a fearsome new power. He wants to help it all happen. Further more, he is behind the Amekage the whole way and looks down disdainfully on those reluctant to follow her word.

His father creates torn feelings in him because of this. Koru's father was an avid believer in Ishimaru, and when he dissapeared, he immediately suspected foul play. While he is not among the 'naysayers', he is also not for any future plans that their young new leader may have in store. Though Koru loves and respects his father, he cannot ignore his own feelings that everything that has been happening in and around the village will leader to a brighter, stronger future.

The difference in opinions within the Satake household has caused some tension, and Koru and his father have grown somewhat distant from each other in the past few weeks.

The boy hopes that it will soon be his turn to rise to greater esteem, and he is eager to aid the ressurection of an above ground Amegakure.

Writing Example:
Harsh, white light filtered through his closed eyelids. He pulled the sheets of his bed up higher, tucked them around his chin, and rolled over. He'd been up late the night before, and today felt like a day to wander around the house in his boxers. He breathed deeply and let the breath leave his lungs the way a snail would leave a trail of slime. If only his regimen allowed for something like that.

With a bit of effort, he lifted himself upwards and swung his legs over the bed; the chill air of his bedroom caused goosebumps to creep up his back, the nape of his neck. He shivered and thought of how nice a warm shower would feel on his chilled bones. It would be silly though, he thought, to get clean and then get dirty again in a few hours. Best to shower after his training.

He dressed quickly and clipped his metal weights around his ankles. Everyday they were feeling a little bit lighter; he felt a little bit stronger, a little bit more experienced. I wouldn't be long until it was his turn to prove his worth. The thought made him smile inwardly.

Stepping over sketchbooks, pastels, dirty clothng and a various assortment of other objects, Koru exited his room and tromped down the stairs, leaping the last six with ease. It was something he'd been doing since he was just a tike. Every morning, he'd parade down the stairs and take a leap of faith of the last few. As the years progressed, more steps were gradually added to this, until Koru might as well had been jumping from the top. Vaulting into the kitchen as quick as he could, he swiped an apple from the fridge and was out the door.

Startled, Koru halted, his hand still on the door, the apple hanging from his salivating mouth. He looked over--his father was seated in a rocking chair next to the door. Their eyes locked for a mere moment. His father had aged substantially in the last year. His long hair, oiled and tied back, had streaks of silver. Grey pricks of beard lined his strong jaw. When Koru looked into his feirce eyes, he saw sadness and restlessness. It hadn't yet been his time to retire, and yet a single mistake had cost him his entire career; the boy wondered if he was lonely sometimes.

"Where are you off to?" A thick, husky voice.

Koru shut the door quietly and brought his hand up to take the apple from his mouth. "Just training Dad, nothing special."

His father nodded knowingly, looked away, looked as if there was something else he wanted to say. He opened his mouth and then closed it again.

"Four years today," He murmured, "Since we lost your mother."

The date had slipped Koru's mind, and he promised to punish himself for that one later. After the bewilderment of how he'd forgotten such an important date, Koru was struck with the ever moving current of time. It didn't slow down, not for anyone. Under Time's grasp, everyone was equal. The rich and the poor, the shinobi and the citizens. All the same.

Koru sat down next to his father's rocking chair, and together they watched people, all aging every second, all subject to Time's games, walk languidly down the street.
