Default [Mist Genin] Tanuma Gekko

Name: Tanuma Gekko
Age: 15
Sex: Male
Height: 5’2

Character Type: Shinobi

Country/Village: Water Country / Hidden Mist
Rank: Genin (Advanced)
Division: NA

Physical Description: Gekko is a scrawny looking kid, having a lean build and quite the unimpressive physique with a very visible rib cage under his clothes. He isn’t quite malnourished, but quite skinny, especially for a person who knows how to handle a fairly large weapon. His skin has grown a little tanned over due to the amount of sunlight his job forces him to endure. His hair is black and it’s also short and even, less than an inch long in all areas of his head and he isn’t really old enough to have any facial hair worth mentioning just yet.

Clothing: Gekko is normally seen wearing loose fitting, comfortable sweatpants; large enough to not hamper his movement but not so big as to get stepped on or tangled into anything. His favorite shirt is a bright yellow one that is completely plain, save for the occasional stain or tear here and there. Tanuma is also a big fan of running shoes and he wears a black and white pair almost at all times. On top of his clothing, Gekko wears a gray jacket that has a few black stripes at the bottom and two thicker stripes just above his elbows. The stripes near his right elbow has a white hidden mist village logo in it.

Personality: By nature Gekko is a person who is always avoiding arguments and conflicts, physical and verbal ones alike. He feels like such petty things are a waste of time and it’s also because he doesn’t like being the center of attention, being kind of a shy guy. He prefers having an aura of mystery around himself and works hard to maintain such a reputation.

When possible, Gekko prefers to have others doing his work for him. It comes partially out of laziness and sometimes he just feels proud of himself for having the ability to manipulate others. It doesn’t always work but he feels extremely satisfied when it does. He attempts to be cunning whether it works or not and as a result he had been dubbed a snake on more than one occasion.

Being a beastmaster Gekko is perfectly fine when put in isolation. It isn’t that he dislikes people or is a notorious loner, but he manages to adapt well, having his pets to converse with, regardless of how much of the speech is lost in translation from both parties.

Biography: Gekko was born in the Water Country, in the Hidden Mist village seeing how his father, Hanabi was an active shinobi of jounin rank. His mother, Hana on the other hand was a ‘retired’ miko. She had once served in a temple but in her adventures she met the senior Tanuma and eventually went on to live with him in the outskirts of the Mist village. Hana was still a capable Miko, but she stopped being one in any official sense.

As a hobby to occupy her time, Hana ran a makeshift animal shelter, taking in and caring for injured animals of all sorts and that hobby rubbed off on the young Tanuma. He ended up spending most of his free time with his mother, learning much of what she had to teach regarding both animal care and some of the basics of spiritual techniques. It wasn't that his mother wanted to change his path, but she strove for him to be as resourceful as possible, being a big believer in that knowledge was power. Meanwhile throughout his childhood, Gekko was nagged into entering the shinobi academy. His background with animals in addition to the training he had received saw him become a beast master, using Sorai, an oversized husky as his fellow beast. Sorai wasn’t one of the animals that the Tanuma family tended to, but it was a child of a husky that had died from illness in their care so Gekko saw to raising that dog instead of releasing it orphaned and back into the wild.

Sorai trained just about as hard as Gekko did, becoming quite the asset and an invaluable tool for Sorai; it was what saw him through numerous difficult situation that he wouldn’t have otherwise succeeded in without it. The dog was definitely more useful than any item or technique that he had learned up to that point.

The years went by and it was finally time for Gekko to graduate and become a genin. He was assigned to fight against a taijutsu specialist. It was an extremely difficult fight for Gekko, seeing how most of his skills weren’t really suited for combat as he was more of a medic and a scout. However as a shinobi he was supposed to be resourceful so he did just that. By combining his own efforts along with Sorai’s, he managed to get the husky to pin down the opponent as he struck him with his spear, punching a hole in the opponent and having the fight interrupted to avoid an unnecessary death; Gekko was declared the winner and was appointed as a genin of the hidden mist.

Gekko normally preffered to avoid conflicts, physical and otherwise. He enjoyed viewing everything from the sidelines without being directly involved so he applied to the medical corps, but was refused since he was considered ‘not talented enough’ for such a competitive division. Unfortunately for him he was forced to remain among the group of people who saw action and started functioning as a scout who offered minor medical assistance.

In the war with Seagull, Gekko started really regretting not working hard enough to be a medic. As a scout, he was always the first person to spot danger, always expected to give urgent updates and if he wasn’t careful enough he was always the first to be spotted and attacked. The last part really had him feeling like he didn’t like his job, but it was something that he eventually managed to get over to some degree. Getting up on the mast still brewed an uneasy feeling in his stomach even though it was a part of his daily job. While he may not have realized it, his sheer will to avoid such things taught him much about being sneaky.
