Default Leaf Genin - Kashiwagi Zanko

Name: Kashiwagi Zanko

Age: 12

Sex: M

Height: 5'2''

Character Type:Shinobi

Country/Village: Konohagakure/Country of Fire

Rank: Genin

Division: Hada

Physical Description and Clothing: Zanko is rather physically unimpressive. He has a slender body better suited to running than to more strenuous activity, though his mouth often talks him up to be several sizes larger than he actually is. Dark brown hair, shaggy to the point of ridiculous, drapes down his neck and along his shoulders-the same color as his eyes. His knees are scratched, his shoes scuffed, his hands calloused and his skin tanned: this is a boy used to spending long hours outdoors, often at work. There is an old scar on his right ankle-- an animal bite from his farm boy days-- and a persistent coating of dirt on the backs of his hands. His forehead protector is, oddly enough, tied tightly around his forehead.

Zanko has a preference for comfortable clothing, usually long-sleeved and generally flecked with the same dirtstains that Zanko himself is coated with. Earthy colors- green, brown, tan, dark red- seem to be his favorites. He prefers jackets which are thick enough to conceal a few rows of projectile weapons along the inner lining, but still allow him to retain his mobility. Knee-length shorts and sturdy leather boots complete his usual outfit. He seems to be more comfortable without clothes, and given the chance, will remove his shirt without provocation. Modesty is a concept that will come in time, along with maturity.

Personality: Stubborn, enthusiastic and outspoken, Zanko is the type of person who isn't interested in getting the last word in a coversation so much as being heard in the first place. Call it a product of being the youngest of his siblings, but the boy loves to argue- with anyone, about any topic. He's not picky. Despite the combative nature of his words, he hardly ever takes anything personally and drops a dispute at the moment something more pressing comes up. He gets along well with younger children, perhaps because he relishes the idea of being the older brother for a change, and will usually go out of his way to help them in their time of need.

A strong believer in working for what you want, Zanko dislikes the feeling of being indebted to someone and is extremely reluctant to allow himself to be placed into the position of owing someone 'a favor'. This manifests itself in what comes across as a streak of arrogance-Zanko would rather do something wrong ten times than ask for help and get it right on the first attempt. Ironically, one of his pet peeves is having his opinion disregarded or dismissed because of his age or upbringing; and yet that is something he is more than willing to do in his fervor to pave his own path.

He's far from forthcoming when it comes to revealing his vulnerability, and it's under such circumstances that Zanko turns abrasive. This manifests in something as petty as a sharp comment about a sensitive subject to verbal abuse long after the matter is dead. There's only so much that training can prepare a person before, and when confronted with the unfamiliar and the unknown, the boy's first response is to put up a front: downplay his ignorance and claim knowledge of the subject at hand rather than look foolish. The boy has yet to be thrown into an actual combat situation, but he's not looking forward to the experience.

Outwardly, he treats Dog rather poorly; or rather, he leaves the dog to its own devices whenever possible. Food? Water? Forage for it, mutt. However, the animal is as close to him as his own family, and he would never knowingly place Dog into danger if he can help it. In their sparring sessions, they appear to anything but a master-pet team, as they are often as far away as possible from each other.
Nindo; "Way of the Ninja": Thanks, but I'll do it my way."

Clan/Bloodline: No

Combo Archetype: Savage
Combo Special: Twice per thread, the Savage's beast can use one Ninjutsu technique the Savage knows. The jutsu used each time must be different, and they count as part of the Savage's given uses for that jutsu per thread.
Description: Wild. That is the only way to describe the Savage. Etiquette is an anethema to the Savage; try to teach one fine dining and you'll end up with broken china and half a tablecloth. These Beastmasters tend to be more 'at one' with their animals more so than any other type of Beastmaster. Perhaps it is the untamed nature of the Savage, it will never be known. All that can be assured is that when wolves howl, the Savage howls along loudest of all; when the lions roar, the Savage roars and drowns them out, and when the falcons fly, the Savage's spirit soars with them.

-----------------------------------------
Biography: Kashiwagi Zanko was the youngest of the Kashiwagi brood, preceded by three brothers and two sisters, son of Kashiwagi Shunsuke. The Kashiwagis had owned and tended to a sizable chunk of land in the countryside of the Yokuchi no Kagarinai for as long as anyone could remember, and they were damn proud of it. History had taken them through ups and down, times of plenty and times of strife, and the acres of land in their possession had fluctuated wildly over the years, but no matter what happened, there had always been a Kashiwagi who had been ready and willing to inherit their birthright and tend the land, just as their fathers had before them. From as soon as he could walk, Kashiwagi Zanko knew that the responsibility would never be one he'd take willingly, if ever.

That's not to say he hadn't tried. Kashiwagi Shunsuke controlled over eighty acres of fertile land, and though he hired many laborers from the surrounding area to help tend to the fields, it was customary for the youth of the Kashiwagi clan to pay their dues and perform chores around the farm, no excuses. There were plows to pull, seeds to plant, equipment to clean, people (and animals!) to feed and so on and so forth. Zanko was the runt of his litter, though he fiercely denied it, and though he was enthusiastic enough, he always seemed to muck up whatever task he had been given. Oxen under his lash would inevitably plow crooked, ruining the row and setting them a day back. The scarecrows he built fell apart. The fruit he picked would come back bruised and beaten, and some had bite-marks. His cooking could best be described as 'interesting'.

His father was at a loss. No Kashiwagi would ever get a free pass from the day's chores, but on some days, he really hesitated before rousing Zanko for the day's work. It wasn't his fault that he seemed to be so incompetent when it came to working around the farm-- anyone could see that he was truly trying his level best. It just wasn't enough. What was he going to do with that boy?

"Send him off to Academy," his mother suggested. "Clearly his talents don't lie in the field--a new experience might do him some good. Even if he's not up to the challenge, he'll learn discipline, and Kami knows he needs it."

It wasn't the best solution, but it made more sense than keeping Zanko on the farm. So it was decided that the boy would head east to Konohagakure, to try his hand at an entirely different trade.

***

Zanko was 7. In four short years, he would be called upon to demonstrate that he was capable of serving as one of the shinobi of the Hidden Leaf. The only remnant he took with him of his days on the farm came in the form of one of the family's sheepdogs, simply called Dog, who was more used to life on the farm than running alongside shinobi. In some ways, it seemed as if his parents were setting up for failure before he could even begin. Years of farm work had gifted Zanko with wiry muscle that helped shorten the gap between him and his peers in the category of physical fitness, but mentally, he was in for a rude awakening.

Would you take one life to save a thousand? Could you follow orders under extreme duress, even if compliance with them could cause the death of your teammate? Ordinarily, these were what Zanko could classify as 'heavy' questions, and could be taken apart in a hypothetical sense...but that was not the case for very long. The country was soon embroiled in the chaos of a war with Yukigakure. Rumors concerning the Hokage's location spread like wildfire, and as insulated from the events abroad as the Academy was, It forced Zanko to do some 'heavy thinking' on his future. His family was miles away, in what felt like the terribly exposed countryside, and though there was no way that the border could be breached by Snow-nin, he worried for their safety.

It was this inner conflict that drove him forward in his convictions to succeed at the Academy and become a shinobi- to help his family in ways that previously hadn't been possible. On the farm, Zanko had been a hopeless screw-up. In the village, Zanko had the opportunity to be somebody- somebody important enough for his family to respect. And so he set about the process of reinventing himself.

His timing was fortuitous in some ways, for the village of the Leaf was going about a similar transformation.

***

The tumultuous period after the war was also a formative one for Zanko, for it marked the first point where he began to give serious thought to what he wanted to do if and when he was to graduate. All of the academy students had received a similiar core curriculum up to this point, but the war left every division in need of more: medics to tend to the war's wounded, scouts to watch the borders, soldiers and warriors to bolster the ranks in case of more conflict. Every avenue was open to follow, and the decision was his own.

For any young child at his age, it was a difficult choice to make. It was the point in time where one's preconceptions of their heroes, their self-image and the cruel reality behind them come sharply into focus, and Konohagakure was no exception. Who was he supposed to become, to emulate? The Hokage, who had led them into war only to disappear before its conclusion? The ANBU, chased out of their own village and branded as criminals and traitors? The elders, who most people could never quite work up the nerve to criticize in public?

It was a confusing enough concept for most adults to consider, let alone a genin out of his element. The answer came rather unexpectedly one sunny day when beast and master were relaxing outside of the city after a particularly strenuous class. Konohagakure's countryside was nothing like the rolling hills of his home, but it was close enough for government work. It was at that moment at time, as he watched the clouds drift across the blue sky, that his gaze drifted to Dog, who was snoozing blissfully in the sun. His hind legs twitched as he yipped and growled at dream-rabbits. This was an animal that was capable of keeping pace with a shinobi, of tracking, hunting and killing if the situation called for it. Through the application of chakra, it was capable of performing feats that no normal dog could ever hope to imitate. But it was also just a farmyard dog a long way from home, and it never tried to be anything else. It didn't need to. It just...was.

That wasn't such a bad thing, was it?

Zanko didn't lose the sense of pride he had in his accomplishments, but from that day on, he stopped trying to be something he wasn't. His grades weren't at the top of his class, nor were they at the bottom. His physical abilities were far from their peak, but he was no weakling. He was average by any observer's standards: the youngest of the Kashiwagi clan, a screw-up on the farm but a shinobi all the same. No one else could be like him but him, and that was just how he liked it.

To his surprise, Zanko had no problems collecting commendations and references when the time came to assemble his profile. His instructors all praised two qualities in particular above all others-- Zanko's sense of perspective and his tenacity. He was a shinobi who would never lose sight of who he was protecting for the sake of his hubris.

Other Info:
-Was given the nicknames 'Country Bumpkin' and 'Hayseed' in school. Hates them.
-Dislikes cursing; utilizes colorful epithets to avoid giving in to the urge.

Beast Master Pet Sheet
Name: Dog
Species: Border Collie
Age: 6
Sex: Male
Height/Length: 20 in./35

Rank: Genin
Physical Description: Surprisingly enough, Dog looks to be slightly cleaner than his master, if only just. Save for its snow-white belly and a single strip of fur running up the dog's snout, Dog is covered in a thin coat of black fur. One of its floppy ears is a bit shorter than the other; a reminder of an incident with a coyote back in Dog's younger days. Its dark brown eyes belie the keen intelligence that sets this dog apart from the rest- as the partner of a shinobi.

Personality: The yin to Zanko's yang, Dog is a rather relaxed specimen. On the average day, he is content to wander about the village at large, alternating between long naps in the sun and starting up as much mischief as possible. He has a fondness for digging holes and chewing whatever is at hand; Dog has a particular talent for sniffing out exactly what people care most about and gnawing on it mercilessly. Though signs of affection between master and pet are rare, it is clear that they care a great deal about each other. Quick movements or loud words towards Zanko will draw Dog's ire in the form of bristled teeth and fierce growling.

Though he has left his herding days behind in the fields of the farmland to the west, old instincts die hard. People who spend enough time around the canine will often find that the dog trails them from a few feet behind, 'herding' them unconsciously through a series of snout nudges, whines and soft growls. Children and small livestock take precedence when it comes to this old impulse, followed closely by whomever is available.

Despite his troublesome nature- or perhaps because of it- Dog has a rather large following amongst the very young and the very old. He will sit, play dead or roll over at the drop of a hat in exchange for some small morsel of food from one of his admirers, only to pointedly ignore similiar commands from his master. A mission is one of the few times one will witness Dog at his most obedient.

Actually, by my count, you only used 7 of your 8 free jutsu on the kid.

That and there is no mention of the /most/ recent events in Leaf. The invasion of the Sanda beasts, ANBU coming back, and the change of government.

Well, for now there are only a few things for me to pick on here:

1. Why Zanko? I'm sure you picked it for a reason, but names ending in ko usually refer to females. Kinda interesting, actually.
2. At this point, I think most of the mod base would say not to have jutsu descriptions under the requirements in your jutsu selection.
3. Pretty much what Sinn said about recent events, I guess... though I guess that doesn't weigh as heavily on me. I thought it ended on a pretty good note (in his story so far), but I'll have to ask WoF if she's okay with it as is.
4. Who exactly is calling Dog "fucking dog" if Zan doesn't like to curse? :3

kk

Juu, I wish I could say I put extra special thought into my names, but I don't, not really = |
It can be changed if necessary.
Jutsu descriptions, man, I forgot that. Will fix.
The bio ended when it felt most natural. While I knew I didn't specifically mention every single arc in Leaf history...I wasn't particularly concerned about it because it would feel like it would come off awkward, shoehorned in for the sake of meeting that requirement. 'Some Sanadabeasts came and Zanko hid/fought.' Again, I can edit if necessary.
Dog's nicknames come from the most commonly repeated epithets hurled from the general populace. 'Fido' to you is 'that mangy mutt from Juu's house' to your neighbor.

Approved once those descriptions are gone!
