Default [Naval Ship] The Gallant Steam

The Gallant Steam
Mist Field Operations Team 117

Powered by the soul,
Wrought by the steel,
The left hand of the Sea Lance,
Sails The Gallant Steam.

Few know of The Gallant Steam. The boat is too small to have a reputation. At best, it is mistaken for one of the offshore patrol boats that roam the waters around the islands of Mizu no Kuni. The mistake is an easy one to make, as the construct of the boat is the same. Made to only house four or five shipmates comfortably, there is only one hull beneath the deck, and most of the hull is separated into four rooms and an open kitchen/living space. It is a cramped ship, but it is only used by a team of Sailors who are expected to use the steam-powered engine for speed, to reach islands quickly and inconspicuously for missions by the hand of the few.

Perhaps the best reason for The Gallant Steam's lack of infamy is that it never lingers long enough in one place to be known. The missions assigned to the crew are to be completed quickly and without problem. If time is running out, failure is accepted as a better option than for the country to know that Takarabe Juzo, and Kirigakure, has been employing soldiers on the other islands. Even in the case of the Gallant being discovered, the boat is not a government vessel, as it is registered in the Tanshin Clan name. It is a political safeguard more than anything else, as it operates strictly in the interest of Mist, though word has it the Tanshin Clan has used it for it's own affairs.

As the boat is small, and not constructed for battle on the sea (it possesses no weaponry, only a steam-powered engine) it is not surprising that the missions the crew takes are not often done upon the sea. The Gallant Steam does not house a Tactical Officer, and as of yet, many of the Sailors that make up the crew are still awaiting promotion to Ensign. In fact, The Gallant Steam has been known to leave a spot open below deck for the crew to house another member, beit a medic or an investigator, in the case that their missions require the assistance. Nonetheless, the duties of The Gallant Steam are ones of stealth and a deft hand. They don't sit idly, awaiting orders to leave once they complete the mission. They power through the night, formulate plans, and navigate the islands without hesitation. Together, their mind is one, just as the many particles of vapor make up a larger, boiling body of Steam.

The Crew
Accepting Guest Crew Additions At This Time, Any Rank with Justification.

Sazanami "Surgeonfish" Tako
Chief Navigator, Engineer, Tactical Ensign
Tako has worked The Gallant Steam since he refurbished the vessel four years ago. He has seen it through the promotion of many of his comrades, and has worked underneath some of the rising stars of the Navy of Mist. Now, he uses his knowledge of Steam Ninjutsu and Tanshin Clan Techniques to power the boat, and his knowledge of the islands to guide his crew from mission to mission, the organization of which also being his job. Tako works hard with Gushiken Ren to make sure that the ship succeeds with all of it's objectives. Often the loud-mouthed Navigator is the one who deals with the Navy and Mist's administration. He chooses and accepts the assignments that the Gallant Steam's crew go through, all with the understanding that that which goes wrong will have his signature beneath it. Known for his temper, his crew members can know him to be the type to scream their ear off if they try anything horrendously stupid.

Gushiken Ren
Officer of The Deck
Another orphan of Mist Country, Ren does not hail from any clan but, instead, has fought the stigma of being only half-Water Country by blood for his whole career. A dangerous swordsman, with an even more dangerous cleaver sword, Ren is the defacto leader of the boat. While the boat belongs to Tako, Ren's years as a sailor has proven his merit on the sea. Rumor has it, he wields illegal Raiton techniques, something he learned with his parents' vengeance in mind. While Tako and Ren may occasionally differ in their opinions of what to do, the pair are the headlining reasons that the Gallant Steam is as trusted of a boat as it is. Their dynamic as silent killers are one of the reasons the Gallant Steam is slowly boiling into whispered infamy.

Hyousetsu “Silverfin Carp” Echizen
Engineer, Artisan & Lead Mechanic
The son of one of the Seven Legendary Swordsmen of Mist (Kiri no Shinobigatana Shichinin Shu) who attained the Number One Rookie honorific of his class, the introvert genin Echizen was personally approached by Tako after the last crewmate couldn’t handle the ship’s dynamic and left. As the latest installment to The Gallant Steam, Echizen’s acute attention to detail derived from his massive knowledge of weapon and blacksmithing has gained him the position of the ship’s Mechanic. Through his nervous and drawn-back tendencies, Echizen has become the quiet medium creating a balance between Tako and Ren’s personalities. As such, he can always be found in the ship’s boiler room, tinkering away at something amidst the buzz of steam about him.

Getsuei Gen
Janitor, Lookout & Trusty Deckhand.
Gen is Echizen’s numero uno compadre, but with his leading man mentality, wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. Tako, being the kind man that he is, gave him a mop to clean the plank instead of making him walk it. When that failed to contain the boy's overabundant energy, he was also assigned the position of Ship’s Lookout, thus bestowing upon him the most physically demanding set of roles possible. Taking the challenge in his stride and with pride, Gen is easily the most mobile crewmember, whether clambering up to his perch above the Gallant Steam's pilot house or swimming below the waterline to peel pesky mollusks off the hull, and subsequently seems to be everywhere all the time.

The Guest Crew

Boukyaku Izumi
Primary Medical Officer, Ship Chronicler
The only feminine face attached to the ship is that of the young, newly promoted Jounin. Despite her position as the medical officer, she serves to assist in the morale of the crew and offset Tako's generally harsh treatment. Izumi also takes on a motherly role when it comes to the young members of the crew and brief guest appearances. The final official capacity in which she serves, is to keep records of The Gallant Steam's adventures.

The Gallant Guppy
Kayak On The Starboard Side
Its actual name is The Swordfish, as designed by The Twilight Blacksmith. It’s a kayak-sized Gondola that hangs on the starboard side of The Gallant Steam – right outside the window of Hyousetsu Echizen’s room. This smaller escape vessel can hold up to two people, and is fitted with a handheld mechanic engine – an outboard motor – attached to the rear. Often used by Echizen for personal adventures, The Swordfish The Gallant Guppy’s lightweight and high maneuverability makes it a stealthy addition to the ship.

Description of Crew Member, including history with the ship, some note of their talents, specialties, how they got there, their camaraderie with the rest of the crew, etc.

To those who are interested, characters may join this crew, just post your interest in this thread. If you'd like to use it in your biography, shoot me a visitor/private message. A little disclaimer; Gushiken Ren is in the registry, and Sazanami Tako is still being finished.

As Getsuei Gen is Echizen's partner in crime, it would be a crime to split up the two boys so early in their journey together. Although I can't think of a role yet, Gen should be a natural choice.

I've got some Mist brewing around my ankles, he's younger. This piqued my interests - and his.

So I just read a little of Toushi, and I don't see why he can't be a part of the fun in certain contexts. The Gallant doesn't house anyone with the rank of Officer or above on a regular basis, mostly because the boat is too insignificant to really deserve an Officer's attention, but I could imagine Toushi being the guy from the Navy who comes and makes sure Tako and his crew are holding up the standards that the Navy expects of them (which may or may not be true), and maybe accompanying them on any particularly high profile missions they may be assigned to?

I don't know what you were thinking about for the role Toushi would play but if you want to write something up, I can add you to the ranks of our "Guest Crew", which features shinobi that may not spend all their time on the boat, but definitely have and/or will play a part on the Gallant Steam.

I'll send you a little back story later. It'll make more sense.
