Default [Leaf] Nara Shinzo

Name: Nara Shinzo
Age: 22
Sex: Male
Height: 6' 2"

Character Type: Shinobi

Country/Village: Fire Country / Konohagakure
Rank: Jounin
Division: Omoi

Physical Description: Always wearing at least a subtle grin, Shinzo's eyes--brown, when visible--are usually concealed by a pair of rounded red glasses. His black hair is usually cut short, though it still manages to look some level of unkempt and messy. He also tends to sport large, well-trimmed sideburns. Tall and relatively skinny, Shinzo isn't exactly built like a fighter, but he's surprisingly agile and manages not to look clumsy and lanky when he moves. Like everything he does, he tends to move with definite purpose in every step, more like a predator on the hunt than anything else. On occasion, vague hints of all sorts of body art can be seen on him when his sleeves ride up or his shirt is unbuttoned.

Clothing: Shinzo is a surprisingly sharply dressed young man most of the time. A product of his time spent working undercover as an arms dealer, Shinzo often favors formal clothing like suits and ties. Despite how well-fitted his suits seem, though, he moves in them just fine; his clothes are, in fact, tailored specifically to function well for his shinobi duties. He especially favors a tie clip bearing the symbol of Hidden Leaf, as well as a cufflinks that bear the Nara clan swirl. It's generally unclear whether or not he needs to wear glasses, but he always has a pair on, whether it's a pair of silver-rimmed, square-lensed glasses or his signature rounded ones with red lenses.

Personality: Most people see the typical, lazy Nara when they look at Shinzo. All things considered, it isn't an entirely inaccurate assessment of him. One of his biggest pet peeves is wasted effort, and Shinzo does nothing without a purpose in mind. Once he sets himself to achieving that purpose, there is often very little that can stop him.

Despite his outward appearance, Shinzo never takes himself (or, for that matter, anyone else) too seriously. It often translates as a complete lack of respect for authority and structure, but really Shinzo feels as if most societal niceties are pointless gestures. While he certainly isn't above being the proverbial silver-tongued devil when he has to be, he is often brutally blunt and honest with those closest to him, moreso with those he actually cares about.

Shinzo is notorious for doing things for no other reason than his own personal amusement; 'because I felt like it' is often justification for him to do a number of things. He often refers to himself as 'an eternal student of human nature'--in other words, he will frequently do or say things just to see how people react. An insufferable prankster as a child, Shinzo is much more mature about that sort of thing as an adult, but not by much.

Nindo: "Relax. It's all in the cards anyway."

Clan/Bloodline: Nara
Combo Archetype: Trump Card
Nara Archetype/Ninjutsu Specialist
Combo Special: Once per thread, Shinzo can use the shadow of a thrown projectile in conjunction with a Kawarimi to appear in its location instantaneously. This ability counts as one of the two allowed Kawarimi no Jutsu uses.

Biography:
"I don't think there's ever been a birth as uneventful as mine."
Nara Shinzo was the youngest of three boys, and he quickly turned out to be the most difficult to control. It wasn't necessarily because he was a bad kid, but he quickly identified pranks as a method of both garnering attention and defending himself against two older brothers that often ganged up on him. Taking after his mother, who married into the Nara family, Shinzo was a surprisingly assertive and extroverted young man, well into his Academy years. His penchant for pranks turned into an almost arrogant showmanship, and he quickly garnered a reputation for card collecting and card tricks. It also helped that, when properly weighted, he could throw them as accurately as any shuriken. Still, there was nothing really that stood out about the young Nara, and by the time he was 12, he was just another genin in the crowd.
"What really makes a person special, any way? Nothing. If everyone is special, no one is, right? Every card in the deck is unique. Not all of us can be aces."
Shinzo was never a physically strong kid, but even as a genin, he was a bit taller than most. It prompted him to learn to defend himself more vigorously than most genin who shared his proficiency for ranged weaponry. When he was assigned to a genin team, he found that his teammates often had a very one-track mind about how to accomplish everything, and this was especially obvious in his interactions with Harada Yuko, a taijutsu specialist that had been lauded as one of the most promising out of the academy. The pair argued almost constantly, with her threatening to pound the young Nara into dust on a daily basis--usually after some ill-timed prank, including an incident which left Yuko with neon pink hair for a week. Their jounin sensei had sincere doubts that Shinzo would ever be mature enough to handle being a chuunin.

Promotion never really occurred to Shinzo, and he seemed content to drift through his life without any clear goals. Still, he performed his duties on every mission to the best of his ability. He felt as if there was no reason to put forth excessive effort into anything, and that the best course of action was to wait for life to happen and react accordingly.
"You can only adapt so much. I wish I had known then what I know now. Maybe then..."
The mission was supposed to be a simple scouting mission into Snow Country. With Shinzo's non-confrontational style, standard observation and patrolling should have been easy. Still, no plan is foolproof, and Shinzo learned that lesson when his team was ambushed by Snow shinobi before they had even crossed the border leaving Fire Country. Everything happened rather quickly and even the reports afterward didn't go into a terrible amount of detail, but when everything was over and the dust had settled, Harada Yuko had lost her arm.

At the time, Shinzo thought she had died from blood loss; in order to prevent her injured arm from making it easier for the Snow-nin to track them, she severed it herself to throw them off the trail. Grief-stricken and enraged, Shinzo did something potentially reckless and went back, using the cover of night and killing two of their pursuers before his jounin sensei and other reinforcements finally caught up. By then, however, the damage had been done.
"That was the first time I'd ever wanted to quit anything in my life. For once, I didn't have an answer. I had no idea what to do."
Ultimately, it was his jounin sensei who managed to snap him out of feeling sorry for himself, first by forcing the 13-year old Nara to visit Yuko in the hospital. He had been avoiding it for weeks after the incident, unable to bring himself to face her. He didn't feel much better after he finally did, and though her shinobi career was saved by an implant that gave her a new arm, he wasn't sure he could really handle being responsible for anyone's life save his own.
"For a while... I didn't feel anything. Yuko never blamed me for what happened to her. She just accepted it. I couldn't. And I recognized that I couldn't because she was right about me--I was an immature brat that couldn't handle real shit. What the hell is a 13-year old supposed to do with that?"

"It was like opening a door and seeing the sun for the first time. The world suddenly seems a hell of a lot bigger than the four walls you're accustomed to. And I wasn't ready. The sun was too bright, and my eyes needed time to adjust. So..."
The next year couldn't even be called a drastic change in Shinzo. He started volunteering for some of the more dangerous missions in more urban environments. His remaining teammate called Shinzo's insistence and subsequent introversion 'borderline suicidal'. Nevertheless, Shinzo's more serious side emerged as something to be respected--and feared. He began to excel in taking on single marks, and very few ever saw him coming. Those who did found that it was far too late.
"People act like I became some sort of psycho! That wasn't it at all... I just figured out my place on the chess board is all. And I learned that I can move all the pieces. Every fucking one."
Subterfuge came more naturally to Shinzo as he got older, and by the time the Chuunin exams rolled around, he had already decided that direct confrontation wasn't 100% necessary. In one instance, he convinced one team to alter another team's test via genjutsu, only to expose them doing it and get both teams into a vicious brawl. His own teammates were a bit taken aback by Shinzo's utter lack of morality in the situation, but the end result left both teams too exhausted, physically and mentally, to deal with the fact that the teenage Nara had played them both into poor exam performances; neither even so much as made it to the physical portion of the examination.

Even with all the manipulation and underhandedness that Shinzo employed, those who caught on early figured that the Nara would wash out during anything that involved real combat. This, however, could not be further from the truth; armed with little more than playing cards, Shinzo had discovered multiple methods of dispatching others. He took full advantage of the notion that the Nara clan had never been perceived as fighters; despite his physical limitations, he frequently made it difficult for others to so much as come close to him or his teammates without sacrificing something in return. Through it all, however, he never so much as hinted that sacrificing his own comrades was an option.
"I'm not a jerk. I mean, fuck, I'm not some kind of monster. Don't believe all that 'villain in glasses' crap. If Yuko and Runa-sensei taught me anything, it's that I need to put the mission and the team first. That's it. Fuck your feelings."
The physical portion of the Chuunin Exams surprised even Shinzo's supporters. In an unusual turnaround, someone had managed to steal all of his weapons, and with little time left before he forfeited entirely, a fellow genin and Akimichi clan member jokingly suggested that he use the deck of cards they had been playing with since the matches began.

"I mean, hell, what did I have to lose? Sure, I wanted to win, but I'd been considering something like this long before. I mean, you can carry a lot more cards than you can kunai, right? And all you really need is one..."

The inventive technique definitely garnered him a significant amount of attention, getting him promoted to chuunin not long after. His duties after that were split between consulting and assisting with KSPD cases and various missions throughout Fire Country and in Snow--often with him working alone or in tandem with another chuunin, and almost always involving making someone disappear.

"I think 'phantom' is what people were calling me then. Weird shit."

His next major assignment came over a year later, sending him on an undercover mission in Metsubishi. For the next four years, Nara Shinzo was Kinoru Saizo, a role imagined up for him largely by a jounin team for him to infiltrate a gambling and smuggling ring. There was little to no room for him to be 'the lazy Nara', for years, he was forced to live a separate life away from the village.

"I gotta say... that was pretty hard at first. I couldn't really come and go as I wanted, not with those Metsu goons watching me every second of every day. Then it hit me: this was what I wanted since Yuko. A real chance to start over from scratch."

Being forced to be someone else, crafting an entire new identity and having to live it for several years, left its mark on Shinzo, making him significantly less like many of the other members of his family. That wasn't really saying much though; periods of proactivity were still few and far between, but during Operation Wildfire, Shinzo was tasked with the pursuit and elimination of stragglers that managed to escape the camps.
"I can't say I didn't enjoy it. I mean, how often is it that the monsters we shinobi deal with every day actually look like monsters? I'm not gonna complain if life makes my job easier."
Things only seemed to get worse when the animal hybrids assaulted Konoha. His jounin promotion had come only a few weeks after the last of the slaver camps had been eradicated and all those involved had been either apprehended or killed. Nara Shinzo saw it as a personal mission to wipe them all off the face of the earth--especially after hearing what had happened to his cousin, Nara Hitomi.
"I barely even got to enjoy my promotion when those fucking Sanada-things started swarming the village. Hell, I suggested that we just dissect them all and keep their brains in jars while we figured out what to do with them. Apparently that was 'too extreme' or something."
Much of Shinzo's activity after was closer to home, consisting largely of surveillance and other similar activities. While information gathering seems to be a large part of what he contributes to the village, there are still occasions where someone important needs to be coerced or eliminated--something that Nara Shinzo still does remarkably well.
