Fire literally at her heels Gemmei tried to put together a coherent strategy. Rat-thing was terrifying in a way a few burns and some illusion magic wasn't. It also kind of pissed her off that a rat could be taller than her. What the hell kind of biology was that?

But now wasn't the time for petty complaints. That came later. Right now Gemmei needed to focus on what mattered most: revenge. Like a snake shedding its skin she discarded whatever pieces of flaming clothing she could safely remove. That dumb dress could burn in hell for now, alongside the skin scraped off her face earlier. Good riddance to both!

Then she took off towards the exit, skinny legs carrying her as fast as they could. It certainly looked like a dirty, shameless escape, so Gemmei felt it was necessary to clarify that she wasn't a coward. “Keep the rodent busy!” Her voice trailed after her as she fled towards the door which was only illuminated by the glow from her smoldering outfit. “I got a plan!”

The rat-person's red eyes darted towards the fleeing girl, then refocused on the man in front of her. No doubt the smelly girl would try something dumb, but she posed significantly less of a threat compared to the male human. Sensing his own trepidation from his words the creature took several long leaps backwards and engulfed herself in shadows again.

She spoke in a raspy, but still recognizably intelligent tone. Each word hissed out in between squeaky breaths. “This is the only warning I will give.” From the darkness she began forming more hand seals. “Surrender, if you value your life.”

Every step of Gemmei’s titanic power away from the room released her genjutsu’s strong hold over his chakra system, like a wet blanket being pulled off of his body slowly – one he hadn’t realized he had been smothered underneath until she started her retreat. Her plan - - well, Gemmei was anything if not resourceful. Through the shimmer of her discarded dress, the rat(wo)man before him looked like something that had stepped right out of his nightmares, but after his adventures with a certain spider-centaur summoning snow ninja, it almost was a relief to only be fighting a five foot rat with tits.

The flaming cloth smoldering didn’t offer much in the way of light, but it at least gave him more than the pitch black he had been dealing with when this whole thing started. His kunai didn’t waver from his combat stance as he used his free hand to unbutton his ill-fitted dress shirt, staring across the blade at the monstrous rat.

“Surrender, if you value your life.”

For some reason, a gasoline soaked tit-rat making demands on his life struck him the wrong way.

And with Gemmei out of the room, he didn’t have to worry about friendly fire.

“You’re a ninja rat, huh?” As he spoke, he flung his free hand out forward towards her – the friction of his hands against the air as his fingers turned the vapors in the air to a slurry of ice before throwing them effortlessly like a volley of tiny frozen kunai, disrupting the rat’s handsigns as she twirled her blades to deflect and shatter the ice. “You allied to a village, or you more of a gutter-rat? Why stop a couch delivery?”

She hissed at him, lurching forward through the mist of shattered ice with her predatory legs and disappeared for a moment in the shadows of the room, before coming down on him with her twinned blades – his kunai deflecting one off course as his body snapped around to meet her body with the firm sole of his thrift-store dress shoes. Her eyes widened as the air was forced out of her, and Shiro pressed his kunai up against her parried blade to work down to the guard, throwing her weight off course and towards the ground.

She was heavier than she looked – muscle packed under a rat’s hide. She landed silently, and quickly disappeared into the shadows again.

“Gemmei’s just a child. You’re facing a proper killer, now. You sure you don’t want to talk?”

He didn’t sense the senbon as they flew through the air, not with the smell of gasoline and fire in the air - - - not against the darkness of the room, but he definitely sensed the poison as they embedded into the meat of his shoulder. Three pinches followed by enough burning pain to make him yelp.

“You will die, man-thing. You had your chance.”

Her hissing voice seemed to be coming from three places at once – clones? A side effect from the poison? Suddenly the room’s darkness seemed to be a powerful void, perfectly hiding anything behind the veil. The enhanced senses that defined the shinobi warrior suddenly slipped away from him.

“C’mon, now,” He said, working the wooden spikes out of his shoulder. “You wouldn’t be the first giant rat I’ve had to put down. Let me cut your little tail and get out of here.”

Where did this cold come from? Was it from the layer of clothing Gemmei shed? From the mysteriously infuriating Shiro and his magical ice powers? From the fear of death? As she ran down the fire escape Gemmei rejected all those notions. The chill she felt was relative. Everything felt chilly after when recovering from being set on fire.

Gasoline-soaked fingertips gripped wads of her stringy hair as she tried to make sense of it all. Jagged half bitten fingernails dug into her scalp. Her earlier face wounds still burned like hot coals. It made sense the penthouse would be guarded, but the two weren't even trying to break in! This was just a simple delivery!

...a simple delivery with an enormous paycheck behind it. This is what she got for not asking questions. Kusagakure trained her to be a mindless soldier a bit too well. No excuses now! She needed to get this couch to that penthouse! Otherwise...

Otherwise...

...otherwise what? She squinted in the darkness towards the stairs leading out of the building. What did she care? Shiro could go get himself killed if he wanted. Gemmei had no reason to risk her life over something this sketchy. Even as the necklace she accepted as payment hung heavy on her neck she didn't feel a bit of guilt. That was it, then! She had no stakes in this. When in doubt, pull out!

After all that careful consideration she Gemmei bit her lip in frustration. She didn't have a good reason to be here. But she did not want to lose to Shiro again.

There wouldn't be any warning as a massive wall of billowing smoke filled the darkened penthouse. No sound followed the explosion of vision obscuring mist, but Gemmei's lovely screeching voice did accompany it. “I got this covered, Whitey! Make a break for it!”

Maybe that giant mouse could see in the dark, but it certainly wouldn't be able to see though this.

The billowing smoke rushed into the room like a nightmare wraith, filling up every corner of the room and smothering the embering flames of the dress as the collapsed into the center of the room. Shiro caught a movement as the smoke was disrupted before his entire visual senses were rendered completely useless - - the rat was moving. This was a weak mission, compared to his usual fair of assassination and espionage, but pay was promised to be good and what was left of his shinobi-for-hire honor was on the line, here. Actually killing the rat – the rat itself, even – wasn’t part of the plan, just leaving the couch here in one piece. Part of him wondered if maybe the couch was a McGuffin intended to keep him loyal to this battlefield so the rat could take himself out, take Gemmei out.

But a larger part of him just didn’t want to be in Gemmei’s debt.

He had a good idea for the relative speed of the titrat and her range of movement. He also finally got a good scope for the size of the room, watching Gemmei’s smoke fill in. He spit out a bit of blood and formed a series of quick seals, guessed against estimation, and slammed his hand down with a rudimentary summoning technique of his own.

There was a sudden squealing noise, and he snarled out – “Gotcha!” before pouncing. He could feel the rat thing underneath his grasp, the odd mixture of a lithe woman’s body and the thick rat-hide causing his skin to crawl as he tackled down on her. There was a struggle as his chains tightened into her body, before a pop and springing sound of a summoned creature returning back to the place of their contract.

He fell down against his chains, cold and frigid they were, as they started to reduce themselves back down to dust and energy, and gave a long moan.

“Rat’s flash-stepped home,” He grumbled into the gasoline-slick carpet. “You got a poison panacea, by any chance?”

His shoulder was a lightning web of pain, cramping and sizzling in the edges of his mind, while weakness gripped every other limb. Too much chakra used, too much fighting on an empty stomach and cigarettes. Too much redhead screaming. “Or, damn, this guy has to have a liquor cabinet.”

Jutsu Used: Iron Chain Calling.

Click-clack! The lock to the penthouse door disengaged as if Gemmei held the golden keys. She pulled her fingers back and pushed the door open. What amazing wonders of wealth and grandeur lay behind it?

How would she know? The room was dark and full of smoke. She just wanted to toss the couch in and get the heck out.

Her more-or-less partner seemed to finish out the fight with the rat against Gemmei's insistence he just beat it. Typical. The smoke would last a little while longer and she had been planning on discretely moving the couch while the rat chased after him. Unfortunately from his smug voice it looked like she had inadvertently helped him out. Damn!

She bit her thumb, but put those feelings aside. “Tch. Go ahead and steal booze from the yazuka if you want. I've never heard of that ending poorly.” Gemmei couldn't see Shiro but from the sound of things he was pretty badly beat up. Oh, oh! Maybe she could take this chance to finish him off! Imagine returning home to Kusagakure with a mercenary shinobi who probably did something wrong! Maybe that would get her out of this insufferable marriage.

Interrupting her thoughts was a sudden, blaring siren. Gemmei blinked in the smoky darkness twice before a harsh pneumatic hiss filled the room. Frigid drops of liquid sprayed across the entire room. The fire alarm had been tripped.

“SHIT!” She slapped her face as the water stung the claw marks across her face. “THE COUCH!”

-

Good thing henge disguised being soaking wet as well as massive facial wounds. Out on the Metsubishi street stood Gemmei, looking dry as a bone as she fiddled with her jewelery. She'd taken the shape and form of one of those mobster thugs from before- except way shorter.

Behind her the big fancy building was in an uproar. People piled in and out in frantic waves. Busy, busy, busy. Nobody knew what had happened or why, and probably never would. Just another day in the big city.
