Default As the River Flows to the Sea

It was usually the crazy ones who rose with the sun to watch it climb into the sky, not train themselves to death. She'd had her share of those days, of course, waking as early as four or five o'clock to endlessly throw projectiles at targets and run laps around the oceanside. Nowadays, though the need to maintain her health and strength were greater than ever, lest she get herself killed on a mission, Remichi did not feel motivated to do so. Besides, she'd never really taken the time to admire the simple splendor of dawn.

Standing on a smooth boulder on the shore, she admired the ocean, laid out like a vast blanket for her to see. It rolled gently with the morning breeze, whispering softly each time the waves lapped against the sand. At this hour, the sun was at just the right height to throw a mix of scarlet and violet on the water, a peculiar blend but a pleasing sight for the eyes all the same. Peaceful.... Remichi closed her eyes, content beyond words.

She was supposed to get a Genin team to work with soon, and once that happened, she was certain her already diminutive amount of free time would be cut in half. Still, she was looking forward to it. In her opinion, there was no greater purpose than to pass on knowledge to the next generation...

Memories would wash ashore every now and then. Many people of the Water Country would sometimes wander off to the beach, to toss something into the ocean, banishing it out of their lives forever. Namiko wasn't too different from then. The young female Genin of the Hidden Mist had lost something very dear to her, right here, not so long ago. Coming back here today wasn't easy. Fortunately, the exact location differed by half a mile or so, but still... It were the same waves... The same rocks, and the same sand... The wind tasted the same, bar the copper on her tongue.

Her feet carried her down towards the beach, slowly taking each step as her eyes gazed in eastern direction... The wind came howling towards her, as if something still lurked there... Something that knew. Shaking her head, she tried to smile. Smile for all that had happened, to live life to the fullest... She'd promised it so many times to a tear-soaked pillow late at night, that even that promise would seem like a far away dream at times... And this moment was one of them, without a doubt.

The light was different this time, though. Not just the sky had an orange red glow to it... The sun caused the sky to mix into that blend, creating a strange, beautiful, yet mesmerizing panorama that took her breath, every time again... She'd forgotten how beautiful it could be. In all of her nightmares, it was never this splendid to behold. She's never thought she'd again enjoy seeing the scorching red rise up from the sea...

Namiko knew very well she had to try to clear her thoughts. She'd been placed into a Genin team, and would be meeting her two fellow students and her sensei here, at this beach. She couldn't help but think that the one who chose this location had a bit of private councelling for her in mind, though. However, she thought better than that. She wasn't all that special; nobody would consider giving her a special treatment, for anything. Staying realistic would be best.

The distant mist had slightly obscured the silhouette of a person, standing on a boulder, watching the waves hit into it, seemingly contemplating at that moment. However, now that Namiko came closer, she saw the female Jounin standing there, slowly gaining more detail, as if somebody was drawing in the details while Namiko moved towards her. Watching the woman's long brown cloak wave around, reddish-brown hair caught in the wind, frantically played around with like the fume was tossed around on the waves... This was without a doubt her new sensei.

Slowly, digging her feet into the sand, feeling slightly insecure at this moment, she took a deep breath, and smiled at the waves. Yes. She would do her best. To make life worthwhile... To reach her goals. And her first one was quite a simple goal... "O-Oohayo... My name is Namiko... I am looking for the Jounin that will be the sensei for me and my new team... W-would you be that person?" Smiling, she nodded faintly to herself. Yes. Mission accomplished... Nothing could go wrong now.

The gentle lullaby of the waves, lapping softly on the shore, serenaded Remichi into a reverie that lasted several minutes. One might say she was meditating while standing up, an impressive feat in itself. After Kasegi's death and her newfound determination to return to service as a shinobi, she'd sought advice from distinguished people and discovered that each one cherished a form of spiritual training as well as physical training. As a Genin, she had meditated as part of the class requirement, but hadn't looked beyond that. This had changed by now, of course. The heart and mind were one mutual muscle. Constant conditioning would ensure that she stayed in tip top shape.

Her pleasure was interrupted as she sensed a faint chakra signature approaching. Remichi did not make any indication that she'd noticed the presence, but stood still, analysing it, and determined that it was of no threat. Possibly, it was an early morning stroller, enjoying the sunrise over the ocean as she was doing... An academy student or a Genin, perhaps? ...As she dwelled on the thought, she realized she was supposed to be meeting her Genin team today in the general vicinity of this very stretch of beach.

Eventually, the owner of the chakra source drew near enough for her to hear the sand beneath his/her feet with each step. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. The person stopped. At that point, Remichi opened her eyes, and the grey orbs shifted to the side to survey the stranger.

A young girl was using her feet to play with the sand. As she introduced herself and asked if Remichi was her Jounin sensei, Remichi turned so that she was facing Namiko, pensively silent. Her eyes wandered up and down the Genin, as if scrutinizing her, then her face broke out in a smile. "I believe I am that individual. It's an honor to meet you, Namiko-chan," she inclined her head. "My name is Kibou Remichi.... But I suppose you should call me Remichi-sensei."

Remichi-sensei. It sounded peculiar in her mind, a foreign concept (honestly...her,teaching?) but she shook it off and glanced towards the sea. By now, the sky's violet color had been traded for a shade of fierce orange, setting the water on fire as the sun climbed ever higher. It was still early morning, and she wasn't certain if the other two Genin would arrive as punctually. It wouldn't hurt to begin training a little early. No, rather, it would help them warm up a bit...

"Namiko-chan, if you wish, we can start a small exercise right now, with only the two of us," Remichi offered as she stepped forward, waiting for a response. If Namiko did not feel like beginning just yet, that would be alright, too. Perhaps she could converse with the girl, find out her ambitions and dreams.

Namiko's eyes shifted around, taking in the details of her new sensei. Remichi-sensei's smile told her enough at this moment; she'd crossed another boundary. Surely, speaking to someone with a long dark robe on this beach wasn't an easy thing to do... It brough back a lot of memories... Memories of not so long ago.

Able to create a smile upon her face, the girl nodded, her eyes now clear and wide, the shy, slightly hurt mirage now vanished from her eyes. Time to learn a bit of self-secure posture, she figured. "Yes, Remichi-sensei... An exercise would be good... I hope the others won't mind, though... I'm a bit early, I guess..."

Looking at the waves, she hummed faintly, recalling her day. She had woken up this morning, not quite ready to come here. So she had just erased the thought of the necessity of coming here, and had just pretended for herself she was taking a walk through town, until she'd arrive at the beach. Oddly, she had headed for the beach straight away, without delaying a second, as if being beckoned, called towards that spot where she... Where he... Where it... Happened...

Shrugging it off, she looked at her sensei again and smiled. She'd have to place her trust in this person. This Jounin. She'd have to learn to let people get near her again... Without instantly expecting their death would soon follow after... It was as much like a family curse, though... She couldn't get rid of the thoughts. Smiling at her sensei, she awaited what kind of training exercise she would have in store.

Namiko's earlier tentativeness seemed to have vanished, causing Remichi to smile again in satisfaction. She was perfectly fine with a little pre-emptive training, so now all Remichi needed to do was think of such an activity... Something to test her new student's skills so that she would have an idea of at least one of her team's abilities and limitations. But what... Ah! That would do for now.

Taking a few steps closer to the water, Remichi glanced at the ocean, then back at Namiko, placing her hands together in a seal. "Okay, here are your instructions. I will be...throwing several things, so to speak, at you. Your job is to dodge them. If you are hit three times, then you lose, and this exercise ends. An alternative way of 'winning' is to continue avoiding my attacks until I run out of ideas..." Remichi grinned mirthfully. "But I won't jump ahead. Ready?"

Not bothering to wait for an answer, her hands flashed into action, performing a set of seals too quickly for a Genin's eye to catch. Suikusari no Jutsu... Three ropes made of water burst out of the sea and flew towards Namiko, one for each of her ankles and the last for her neck, seeking to trap her in their confining embraces.

First step, check her student's ability to react to surprise or sudden attack. What exactly Namiko did in response was important, too. Regardless of whether she successfully dodged or was caught, Remichi was already prepared to act. Both hands had retreated into the recesses of her cloak, one in a half-seal, the other on her knife belt.

Her eyes widened instantly. Namiko wasn't prepared for a direct attack... Not at this moment! Quickly, she pulled herself together, however. Actually, this might be best. While fighting, she could lose herself. No more thinking, no more being afraid. Just flowing into the motion, and letting instincts do the talking. That, she could do.

Her feet launched her off the ground, one of the tentacles missing her by an inch right away. She knew she had reacted too late; she hadn't been caught off-guard like this in a long time... Ever since... Dammit, not now!
Clearing her thoughts, she pulled out her sword and swung it forward, her father's sword... Easily, she sliced through the second tentacle, while the third made it to her leg...

Letting out a faint yelp, she let herself fall backwards, landing on her shoulders, and rolling backwards, reeling out with the sword in an upward motion as she felt the water spat out around her, giving her the wet, drenchy wake up call she needed. Taking in a deep breath, she stood up again, staring at the sea. She let out a sigh, and smiled. "I'll be prepared next time, sensei! Please continue!" This time, she sheathed her sword again, keeping two fingers on the handle as she prepared herself...

Unable to contain herself, Remichi smiled as she observed Namiko's actions. Good, good, she was both defensive and offensive when facing danger, dodging the first rope, attacking the second, and though the third had caught her, she didn't panick and reacted quickly enough to destroy it, too. Remichi was going to enjoy working with her...

She wondered briefly to what extent Namiko's swordsmanship reached, then brushed off the thought. Nodding as her Genin verified that she was ready to continue, Remichi dashed to the side, parallel to the ocean while facing Namiko. There was swift movement underneath her cloak, and suddenly two knives flew out, their blades flashing brightly in the morning sun. As soon as she reached the point where she was standing directly in front of Namiko, with her back evenly towards the ocean, Remichi stopped, and flung a shuriken to complete the attack.

Now, to see if Namiko would still employ the same blend of offense and defense. The stakes had been raised slightly, this time with the risk of being cut, but Remichi was certain this would be trivial business for the Genin. Dodging projectiles was standard for any shinobi in a classroom environment. Working up the familiarity in a real combat situation was Remichi's job...

With a quick swipe, she pulled out her sword, and, in a fluent motion, slammed away the first knive, and making a well-balanced threehundred and sixty degree turn on her heel, letting the other fly past her in her sidestep. Realising her current position, her side turned towards the incoming shuriken, she knew she should have simply dodged both... She felt lacking now... Perhaps she wasn't good enough yet after all... Perhaps she never would be...

Shrugging off her thoughts, her face turned angry, her teeth gritting together as she let go of her katana, simply letting it drop to the ground as her hands moved to the other side of her body, pulling out the tanto she had been wearing there. Her brother had once learnt her that the shorter the weapon, the easier it was to make quick turns in action, and she'd taken this lesson to the heart.

Swinging out with a powerful back knuckle, the tanto held in front of her, she managed to break the course of the shuriken, the impact flinging it down into the sand before her. As she continued her sweep, she picked up the katana again, and scurried back into position, sheathing both swords again, one by one.

Her nerves got to her, for a second. Sheathing back the katana, she hit the side of the sheathe twice, her hand shivering, disabling her from fluently sticking it away. Damn, she felt so insecure now... What if she'd make a mistake? How stupid would she look? Trying to smile again, she looked at her sensei. "That was... Cool, I guess... Is there more to come?"

Remichi's eyes were sternly fixed on Namiko, taking in and storing away every slight movement and fluctuation in facial expression for further reference. So far, she was doing spectacularly well, right up to Remichi's expectations and then some. Already, she felt herself instinctively shifting into the role of instructor, a part she never would have seen herself in even two years ago. Amazing how much changed with time.... And equally amazing how much remained the same.

The two knives were easily taken care of, but Remichi caught the look of anger that crossed Namiko's face as the shuriken closed in. For a split second, she thought the projectile would land a hit, but in a flash of decision that impressed Remichi, the katana was temporarily abandoned and a tanto took its place, knocking the shuriken away. Her skill with the two blades was quite good for someone of Genin level. Surely the academy teachers didn't teach this much advanced swordplay as part of their curriculum nowadays? She reached the conclusion that someone must have taught Namiko what she knew... Either that or she was simply a very gifted girl. Remichi made a mental note to look up her student's school profile when she got the chance.

The execution had been performed flawlessly, but there was improvement to be made on the closure. Remichi would not complain that her style was a bit clumsy as long as the objectives could be completed, but it looked bad to potential clients if a shinobi couldn't even sheath his sword the right way. Perhaps Namiko was only nervous... That factor would fade away with time. "You're doing well, Namiko-chan," she said with a pleased smile. "At the moment you stand with one hit. Let me see if I cannot add one more to that tally..."

Once again, her palms slammed together before flashing through a series of seals. As soon as the last seal was completed her hand darted towards the side of her knife belt. With a quick flick of the wrist, two more knives were sent at Namiko, and Remichi leapt into the air. Behind her, and previously blocked from Namiko's view, the water had been convulsing, telltale signs of Remichi's second Water Chains Technique that day. This time, the Genin would have two knives and four ropes of water to contend with...

There should be an easier way to handle this, she thought. Constantly defending never gives an option to come clean; if you keep walking backwards, you will end up against a wall in the end... Her father had thought her that... Memories, caused by the thrill of action, caused by this beach, once again flooded her mind.

Stepping back, she barely avoided the swing of the bokken. Her father's wooden sword might not cause her serious harm, seeing the fact he wasn't doing his best at all, but still he kept her at bay, constantly slamming her back, and she simply fell back after every hit against her sword, only making sure she wouldn't drop it... Avoiding another blow, her wooden sword allowed her to block the next, but her legs forgot to move in accordance; stumbling over her own legs, she fell to the ground, and her father loomed over her, a serious look in his eyes. She tried to smile, perhaps she tried to look sorry... But it had no effect. When training her, her father was never a kind man; he was harsh, relentless, and she understood why. Soft teachers make soft students, he had said, and she had to learn this the hard way.

Now, as he stood there, he offered her his hand and pulled her up to her feet. "Namiko. Get over your insecurity. Learn some aggression. Fighting is more than just surviving blows. In the end, you can walk back as much as you want, but there will always be a wall, somewhere, someday... And you'll be with your back against it... Make sure that never happens."

"I'll make sure..." Her voice trailed along, she didn't even care or take note whether or not Remichi would have heard it. Instantly, she rushed forward, pulling out the katana, slamming away both shuriken in one blow, noticing her hand slipping off the sword... If she'd make sure to keep it steady, she'd fail to dodge the water chains. If she'd drop it, she'd not only look clumsy; she'd be unarmed as well. Her eyes trailed along, noticing the puddles of water that she had created earlier when ripping apart the previous barrage of water chains... And then, she came to her conclusion. "No regrets."

Letting the sword fall down along with the two shuriken, she slammed her hands together, four water shuriken lashing up from the puddle, drilling their way through two of the tentacles, creating more water flying around her as her hands followed with another row of seals, a blade of water errupting from her fingertips as she lunged forward, slamming through another chain as she dodged the other one.

Landing on her knees with one chain still coming up behind her, she started running towards Remichi, pulling out her tanto as she did... Inches before her sensei, she whirled around, taking down the final water chain, sweat pouring down her hair, her body obviously giving it's all... Not much power was left within her, nor would there be much air in her lungs, she knew, breathing heavily. Completing her spin, she fluently sheathed her sword again, and jumped up, a spinning backheel kick aimed towards her sensei... The kick lacked coordination. She was not sure whether or not this was the right thing to do; even if it was, it would probably fail. Offense, ofcourse, was the best defense. That's what her father said. But would Remichi-sensei agree? Eitherway, she thought, as her heel came closer to her Jounin's head... Eitherway... No regrets!
