Default [Mist Chuunin] Murakami Jin

Name: Murakami Jin
Age: 22
Sex: Male
Height: 6'0"

Character Type: Shinobi
Country/Village: Kirigakure
Rank: Chuunin
Division: The Medical Corps - Medical Officer

Research your own experience; absorb what is useful, reject what is useless and add what is essentially your own.

Jin is a tall, lithe man who sways to and fro like a scarecrow preoccupied with some far-away thought. On the contrary to such an observation, the Medical Officer is a focused individual who approaches the matter of his appearance with a high level of methodical shrewdness; cleanliness is next to godliness after all. That being said, he's no deity when it comes to good looks - he has a forgettable face you'd lose in a crowd.

The one exception to Jin's ordinary facial features is a pair of pale yellow eyes, often glazed over from lack of sleep. They're frequently obscured by a skeptical squint, furrowed brow, or a stray strand of hair that sits a shade between gray and beige. Often in need of a haircut, but "too busy" to schedule one, the Chuunin does his best to keep his unruly locks tied-up and out of the way.

While not particularly large, Jin is noticeably muscular given unusually low, single-digit body fat due. His body composition can be attributed to his extensive knowledge of nutritional science combined with a strict dietary regimen. That being said, his physique is a product of chasing optimal biological function rather than vanity. Jin is constantly searching for ways to enhance and improve his body whether it be an implant, drug, or new exercise regimen. He could care less how it affects his appearance (or so he says).
Clean, crisp, and clinical best describe Jin's wardrobe. His blue and white striped pants tuck into a pair of classic, open-toed shinobi boots. Around his waist rests a large cloth haidate bordered in gold stitching and secured by a matching fabric belt. Within this haidate, the medic has stowed various medical supplies and pouches containing the usual tools of the shinobi trade.

Up top, Jin sports a sleeveless, high-collared jacket. Normally, Jin would consider the lack of sleeves a tad unprofessional, but after ripping one too many expensive jackets, he recognizes it as a necessity for the use of his Hoshou no Buki techniques. The clothing adorning Jin's forearms varies from fingerless gages to hand wraps to latex rubber gloves depending on whether he is on duty, off duty, or in the laboratory.

A pouch of medical supplies that doubles as a scabbard for the Chuunin's razor vine sword is secured across his torso by a leather strap. The unique looking weapon, known simply as Irabu, brandishes a blue and gold scaled hilt with horizontal black bands running down the length of the blade. The sword is certainly every bit as slippery and venomous as a sea snake; the ability to extend into a bladed razor vine whip combined with the fact that it's always covered in a paralyzing poison helps ensure that Jin's payload will be delivered and the enemy infected.

Being a bit of a germophobe and fond of diving, Jin utilizes a breathing apparatus for the majority of his waking hours. He appreciates that it also helps him mask his emotions by obscuring his facial expressions. And while he does his best to keep his gray-beige hair tightly tied up, it frequently comes loose, frustrating the young shinobi and falling in front of his eyes or head protector.
Driven, intelligent, and detail-oriented, this medical prodigy is as Type-A as they come. Jin is equal parts prude and cleanly; chaos, noise, and clutter only cause stress for this orderly shinobi. The Chuunin, who has a healthy respect for efficiency and organization, can often be seen jotting down a quick idea or chemical equation in a little black notebook; "brains are good for having ideas", Jin always says, "not remembering them".

At the core of Jin's being is the unquenchable desire to become the master of his own biology. This quest for personal perfection is the man's top priority and the driving force behind most of his behavior, sometimes at the cost of his own well-being, relationships, or morals (all in the name of progress, of course). He struggles to strike a balance between his deep-set need to adhere to the rules and giving himself permission to explore his own ingenuity; his ambition proving a double-edge sword.

Consumed by his work and the world of science, Jin doesn't care much for fun or friends. His objective and matter-of-fact nature lead him to be openly critical of others, sometimes leading to friction. Jin, the eternal skeptic: "If you don't have evidence for your statement, you're just a liar." To Jin this isn't abrasive or rude, it's just how science works. As you'd sterotyipically expect, this hard working medic has trouble "turning off" and relaxing, resulting in a tendency to avoid social situations and other people in general. Whether it's combing the coral reefs (the one thing that he finds relaxing) or research in the lab (a close second), Jin is quite independent and values his alone time immensely. And while he cares little for the approval or opinions of others, he does believe that "one should do something the correct way or not all"; this leads him to be a dedicated teammate and medical shinobi.
Nindo: Through ninjutsu I will become the master of my own biology; evolution awaits.

The black-banded sea krait is a small marine reptile that can be commonly seen combing the tropical reefs of Kirigakure. Also known as the irabu, this sea krait lacks notable speed or physical power, with larger individuals barely clocking in over two feet in length. What the irabu does have is patience and a powerful paralyzing neurotoxin; this combination allows the cold-blooded opportunist to patrol the reef at its own pace, taking whatever unsuspecting prey it pleases. Thankfully, they have no interest in humans...unless threatened.

Memories, like waves,
Erode reality; your
Reflections, fractured

The young boy surfaced with a crash and frantically made his way towards the shore, tripping and stumbling over the waves with one fist held to the sky. As he grew near, Koji caught sight of the source of Jin's panic - wrapped around his outstretched hand was a mass of writhing black-and-white bands - a sea krait.

The irabu was a common sight around the reefs (and a winter delicacy), but that doesn't make its poison any less potent. Koji stood from his blanket and calmly made his way towards his son, preparing the hand signs for Jokyo Dokubutsu as he went. Even after the poison was removed, temporary paralysis (and tears) would remain.

In the weeks following (after the initial fear wore off), little Jin became fascinated with marine life, spending many of his afternoons wading through tide pools or learning to swim the reefs with his mother. These diving trips with his mother became less and less frequent as her health eroded. She was wasting away from a genetic disorder and there was nothing even the medical shinobi could do for her; though Chakra-based medicine became advanced over the course of Mist's many civil wars, the biological sciences side of medicine was limited by the technology of the day.

A line of black and white
Calm amongst a crashing reef
Venom is freedom

They say you can never escape from what you know. And while that may be true, you can't escape your genetics, either. At the moment, the reality of this was staring Jin in the face - his biological machine was clearly not cut from the same cloth as the individual across from him. Gaku was the opponent's name and the difference in strength had been made clear with Gaku's last attack, disarming Jin of his sword during his attempt to parry the blow.

A good head taller and unusually well-built for such a young boy, Gaku had the obvious advantage when it came to physical prowess. He was light on his feet and wielded a rapier with confidence. This had made him one of the clear favorites amongst the old men placing bets on how the Academy students would fare in their duels to become Genin. Knowing all this, Jin analyzed the situation - there was still a way he could win. He drove chakra to his now-empty right hand; moisture swirled around his wrist as he felt the flesh fusion take hold.

As Gaku came forward with his next attack, Jin moved to meet the thrust, allowing the rapier to pierce through his left oblique. With his right, he drove what had become a coral katar deep into his opponent's gut. And for a moment they both stood there, leaning on each other, frozen in time simply as two young men overwhelmed and surprised by what they had done. But it was what had to be done; failure was not an option. Gaku slumped to the floor and medics ascended upon the two young combatants; Jin basked obliviously in the light of his accomplishment for a brief moment before slumping to his knees and off into darkness.

Coral live forever
Humans for but a blink of
Life eternal in the deep

Here they were. At the end of her existence and this is what she wanted him to be focused on? A book? Jin's mother, Aki, smiled and pressed a books of poems into his hand. Aki loved haikus. Jin hated them; he didn't understand them, though, not for lack of trying.

"Promise me, in your pursuit of knowledge, you apply such wisdom as this into your life. Say goodbye to your father for me."

With that, she laid back and left this world. She was determined to go out in a noble way like the characters in the novels she loved so much. And yet, her well-to-do husband was nowhere to be found. But perhaps that just made it all the more like the fiction.

Though he finds poetry frivolous, Jin still forces himself to write at least one haiku in his notebook every day in his Sisyphean quest for understanding his mother's wishes. And every day, the boulder rolls back into the sea. But one must imagine Sisyphus happy, right?

No refuge from the
Hurried steps on tiled floors,
Or scrubs bright with blood

Jin let out a sigh and flicked blood off his hands as he hurried down the hall. As a whole, the Seagull Conflict had proven to be a bloody one; for Murakami Jin this was both advantageous and somewhat annoying. The erupting war had forced the ambitious Chuunin out of the lab and into the field where his medical prowess had led to the promotion of Medical Officer. Jin liked having his own private research lab, but equally hated the additional medical responsibilities that kept him away from his research. And that's exactly what he was dealing with now. The doors down the hall burst open and gurneys adorned with groaning blood-stained bodies rolled into the hallway; it seemed a chakra cannon had misfired and results were messy.

The young doctor ducked into the surgery prep room and washed his hands for what had to have been the hundredth time that day. Though he didn't specialize in surgery, Jin's father, Koji, had, and he drilled into Jin what he considered to be proper protocols for all professional physicians. Despite the sliver of resentment he still holds for his father, Jin instinctively began washing his forearms according to Koji's classic scrubbing sequence. The injuries and causalities were high and thus chakra reserves were running low among the understaffed medical shinobi. Even those, like Jin, blessed with greater than average chakra pools found themselves turning to traditional medical techniques more than they had expected. Thankfully, Jin had much experience in the realm of medical care; but for better or worse?.

It was something he reflected on often during his recent dives. Following his promotion to Chuunin and Medical Officer, he was forced to admit to himself that he was grateful (in one capacity or another) for all the additional medical training his father had put him through. The ordeal that contributed the most to the awarding of his new post had demonstrated his medical knowledge to be an indispensable asset. During the final mission with his Jounin-led Genin team, a Missing-Nin had attacked the party, killing one of his teammates. Jin's remaining young comrade remained rooted to the ground with terror while their Sensei burst into action. He swiftly dispatched the enemy, though he suffered some serious wounds in the process. Jin was able to stop the Jounin's internal bleeding through some improvised surgery techniques combined with a desperate burst of chakra. He also removed some curiously familiar poison, a courtesy of the Missing-nin's blade.

The same blade the now rests across Jin's back. He, like the dazzling little nudibranch, has taken his enemy's weapon as his own.

Taking apart the
Biological machine,
I become a god

The Medical Officer brushed a rebel strand of hair out of his face that had come loose in the operating room's chaos. Jin's other hand was currently preventing a man's intestines from spilling out of his abdomen and onto the floor. He was calm and carried away in the process; with his emotions compartmentalized this was no different to the shinobi than working to repair a ship or machine. He began sewing and found the need to suppress his excitement at fixing what had been broken with his own agency, at putting back together what the world, what destiny, had taken apart. He was becoming a regular Dr. Frankenstein, indeed.

In a whirling flash of fluorescent lights and murmurs, Jin suddenly found himself alone in the break room, hunched over in a chair. It was a moment of unusual calm and uncharacteristically bad posture for the usually poised young man. He was tired. Tired and glad that Maya almost had this whole ordeal just about wrapped up. Soon, the shinobi would take control and the Water Country will once again be led by the strong. For better or worse? "Guess we'll see," mumbled Jin, as he broke his train of thought and took leave; it was one of those rare and precious times during which he got to partake in slumber.

It's not the smartest
Or the strongest that survive,
But those which adapt

The Seven Legendary Swordsmen fascinated Jin; what marvels of human performance! He was proportionately thankful that there was enough order in Water Country that he was wasn't out on the battlefield facing them. In fact, at the moment Jin was in a near-weightless world beneath the waves, hovering over a seemingly endless rainbow field of acropora coral colonies. Diving amidst the ancient reefs was where his mind was most free and his motivations most decipherable.

Shuzamaru was a poison.

Oh yes, poison.

That's how Jin's mind had wandered onto the topic. He had somehow forgotten to restock his field kit with its normal array of toxins due to long shifts in the lab and so he took a dive to get some ingredients; it made him uneasy (and somewhat ashamed) to have Irabu slung across his back without its usual coating of venom. It was like a declawed cat; just wrong. He wasn't having any luck finding quarry though and his mind had drifted to back to the bureaucratic bullshit that plagued his professional ambitions.

Suddenly, there was a quick movement in the water to his right. As Jin turned swiftly, a small stream of bubbles escaped his breathing apparatus, betraying his having been caught off-guard. As the bubbles passed, his pale yellow pupils made out the familiar silhouette of the black-banded sea krait. Jin smiled at his sword's namesake; the little marine reptile is the proud owner of a deadly paralyzing venom ten times stronger than that of your average cobra. Thankfully, they also aren't very fast. The medic made his move, but the snake already having the element of surprise, disappeared into the rock work with little effort.

For a moment, Jin floated weightlessly, alone, simultaneously immersed in both his own failure and the shallow sun-sparkled water; the world was still but for the swaying of the sea.

Back into the chaos

With a kick, he made for the shimmering surface.

The evolution
Of man looms; this isn't even
My final of forms
