Default Hokori Taka - "Sasori"

Name: Hokori Taka "Sasori"
Age: 28
Sex: Male
Height: 6'2"

Character Type: Shinobi

Country/Village: Wind Country/Hidden Sand
Rank: Jounin

Physical Description:

A mortal wound and the ensuing month of being bed-ridden were not kind to Taka’s formerly statuesque physique. Muscles atrophied and his body withered somewhat due to lack of activity and nutrition that was meager at best. It is surprising how quickly the body can undo years of hard work given a serious enough injury.

Though, in a sense, his current appearance makes him much more terrifying. He seems more dire, perhaps, than the former idol in alabaster. Nonetheless, some things don’t change so easily. His cold, daunting eyes, casting their view upon the world through a window of flawless slate are the same as they ever were. His predatory grin—complete with jagged, sharpened teeth—is the same as it ever was. His straight jet hair is mostly the same, though it is no longer done up in the more radical, spiky affair, erring more in the direction of a relaxed elegance, though the real reason is that it just grew longer than he cared to go through the effort of styling up anymore. Much easier to just tend it with a hairpin or two and go about your business with its current length. His old scars have been joined with a new one in his back, where his own weapon found its way to his vitals during the battle against the Sand Priests. This marks yet another stop along the roadmap, joined in that role by the scars along his jaw and right cheek, the gruesome scars of his ‘death’ across his torso, one crossing through the upper left of his torso on both sides and two gruesome puncture wounds where blades went the full way through each lung.

Clothing:

When acting in his natural form, Taka errs on the side of non-descript functionality. It really only amounts to simple black cloth pants with a smattering of simple button-fastened pockets, a plain canvas belt that is there more for the storage it’s pouches provide more than anything else, and a long-sleeved black shirt—the bottom tucked in and the whole thing just snug enough to not be a liability for snags. On his feet, the Scorpion wears black versions of the standard sandal. His hidden blades are there, though you’d never know it, Hairro and Nayoko carefully nestled on their respective arms. And finally, as always, the jagged teeth are hidden behind yet another black mask, as they were during the years with the Sasori Ryoda

Personality:

Hollow.

Once, Taka was a shinobi dedicated to serving Sand. No longer. He is now an automaton, free will and shinobi power stolen from him in one daring stroke. The proud, half-broken man that Taka was has been replaced by this thing. He has been completely Enthralled by Minoru, and anything resembling his previous self is gone. In some ways, he is still very like what he once was; an exceptional tool. Only the former jounin no longer serves the shinobi of Sand.

Biography:

Eight years. Eight years serving Sand as a dead man within the Sasori Ryodan. He had done unthinkable things. He had killed thousands. Some of those had been loyal soldiers of Sand, his brothers and sisters in arms. However, there were only two that damned Hokori Taka. There was his first kill, the one that set his career and life in stone on that windy day over two decades ago, in that cave, where Taka’s father, Toku, gave his seven-year-old son his first assassination mission: to kill Hairro, the boy’s dog and best friend. Then, of course, there is the one that is the stuff of history books, when Hokori Taka, along with his comrades in the Sasori Ryodan infiltrated the palace of the tenth Kazekage, Arisugawa Nayoko, and, after a ferocious and destructive battle, killed her, Taka landing a decisive blow that allowed for the one-time leader of the Sasori Ryodan to finish the job before losing his own life.

Those two kills marked his future and sealed his fate. He was a killer and a traitor. Thus, no surprise, that after narrowly surviving the war against the Suna no Soushuku thanks to the noble sacrifice of Enten Zenji—a man he had demeaned and mocked and whose relationship with Osozaki Nazomi he had seen as a weakness and, in some cases, treason to the ‘divine mission’ of the Sasori Ryodan as Taka saw it—the entirety of the Ryodan was marked as the next public enemy number one and they were hunted as such. Nazomi and Taka, injured as they were, had been smuggled away just in time to evade the obliteration of all that was the Scorpion Brigade.

They were kept separately, hidden, with neither team having knowledge the location of the other. This was to ensure that, if one was caught and flipped, they’d have nothing to give as to the location of their fellow traitors.

And, so, for three weeks, while Sunagakure celebrated and rebuilt, Hokori Taka lay within a glass-coated cave within the wastes, recovering from his near-fatal stab wound that had nearly paralyzed him when his own weapon—named Hairro after his first friend and victim—had been flung by one of the Suna no Soushuku’s golems and into his back. Nearly paralyzed him, nearly shredded his heart, and pierced one lung all at once…so much damage all at once. There had been just about enough time to get him stabilized before the forces of Sand fell upon the Dark Sand Tunnels. A small team of medics had evacuated both him and Nazomi before splitting up to head to locations that they had been informed of ahead of time as safe spots by their leader, Shudoujin Sezaru, each group splitting up only knowing of their haven, not the other groups.

Three weeks of recovery and treatment under the vigil of three of his fellow remaining brigadiers, knowing that they were what was left and that the dream they had worked for had essentially jilted their advances, that the fair maiden named Hidden Sand had rejected them all, had rejected their most fervent defender, was nothing less than torture for Hokori Taka. The others tried to engage him in conversation, but he would have none of it. The Scorpion, this weapon-by-birth, had no purpose. He had dedicated his whole life to Sand. He had dedicated his ‘afterlife’ to Sand. And for what?

To be cast out.

Then came the fourth week. The others were busying themselves with various activities to bide their time. Taka wondered what they were waiting for, what silver lining they could see that made staying here in one spot a good idea. Did they think someone would come for them, bringing them back to the fold of Sand?

As the sand was blown away and the glass around them came alive, turning the refuge into what a pincushion must look like from the inside. The remaining members of the Sasori Ryodan had been extinguished, pierced through by giant needles of glass. Someone had found them, all right, and they had dealt them the fate that traitors had deserved. Every last one of them.

Except, that is, for Hokori Taka. As two figures leapt looked down upon the scene, they were glad to find the assassin merely laying there in bed, unharmed by their assault; a testament to their precision. They called out his name. He responded, asking what they wanted. Their answer?

“We have an offer to make you. We suggest you take it.”
**********************************
Not all of the Hokori were like Hokori Taka. Even his sisters were not like him. They were all trained—no, bred—to be the ultimate assassins, but Taka….Taka was far beyond the others, for better or for worse. However, even Taka’s siblings, despite their relative normality, were not the norm for Hokori.

A fine example of a ‘normal’ Hokori, however, would be the of Taka’s cousin, Hokori Sadao. Born the second of three, Sadao was chosen to be the one of his siblings to gain the Sabakudoku training through the methods that the Hokori had established long ago to determine who would receive the training. Traditionally, only one child per family was chosen—Taka’s parents were the only exception to the century-old tradition.

Unlike Taka, Sadao lived a rather normal childhood for a shinobi, aside from the controlled poisoning administered by the Dustmen, many of whom were, in fact, elder Hokori themselves. This cousin was trained as an assassin, yes, but also as a scout and a soldier, as both tactician and tactic. Most importantly, he was practically a leader born. Unlike his infamous cousin, Sadao had a gift for motivating those around him, for making not only allies, but friends.

By the time they were both jounin, Sadao was like a picture of what Taka could have been, the opposite side of the coin. Whereas Taka threw himself completely into his work, separating himself from society and human relationships, his younger cousin thrived in situations where he could bring together a group to accomplish something great. The only similarities came from their last name and the toxic blood coursing through their veins.

Many would expect those who undergo the Sabakudoku training to be essentially sterile, what with their every bodily fluid being toxic. However, there are those who work around this by merely arranging marriages between between the toxic shinobi. Such has been the tradition of the Hokori, explaining fact that Taka and his three sisters exist. His parents were both from toxic stock, allowing them to breed and, with treatments administered by the Dustmen, carry the children to term and even nurse them. The Dustmen oversaw pairing the toxic Sand shinobi together to provide the best possible matches, both physically and mentally, seeking to always refine the next generation of their students.

Such was the situation when Sadao was paired with Nobuatsu Ibiko. The match was made for several reasons that weren’t ever explained, and that was just fine with Sadao. The jounin was just surprised he had never met such the mesmerizing beauty in all his years around Sand. They proved very compatible as their courtship reached the four month mark, upon which the two were set to be married. It was to be a happy affair, uniting the Hokori and the Nobuatsu, both families of some renown and respect within Sand. The afterglow of the ceremony was shattered, however.
The next day, Hokori Taka was repeated deceased in the line of duty at the hands of traitors to Sand. As disconcerting an individual as he had been, Taka had been an astounding shinobi and, in the end, died a hero. The joy of marriage was replaced by prideful mourning.

The years since the union of Sadao and Ibiko passed well, having two children—the eldest, a boy named Hatero, and the youngest, a girl named Akihana—though Ibiko became less and less active as a shinobi, shifting her purpose to doing her part to raise the next generation of Sand. Sadao, on the other hand, did quite well for himself. He had become a proven tool of Sand by the time he was twenty-six; unlike his ‘heroic’ cousin, however, success did not cause the same level of over-exposure that had caused Taka to venture into the wastes a few years before his death. The powers-that-be knew who he was well enough, but the general populace just knew of him as a decent guy, usually.

That is part of the reason why he was given a special mission about a year ago.

********

Taka sat in the plain concrete room, admiring the seriousness of these individuals who had taken him along. A single light hung from the ceiling and the Scorpion now amused himself by wondering how quickly he could kill himself with it if it became necessary. They hadn’t told him their ‘offer’ fully and now were making him wait in here. They refused to give names or ranks. It made the assassin a little nervous for the first time in a long time.

The steel door opened and in came two obscured guards, followed by the woman who had mentioned the offer after killing his fellow brigadiers. He didn’t know her name, but he had memorized her appearance. He went through a checklist for future reference: about 5’6”, blond hair, pageboy cut, fair skin, green eyes, ears pierced, and, to top it all off, unevenness in her step that suggested a recovering injury to her right leg, likely in the ankle. The assassin looked placidly through his stone-grey eyes at them as they entered, closed the door, and set a briefcase on the small wooden table.

“You are Hokori Taka, correct?”

“Since the day I was born. You going to tell me what this is about yet or you going to wait until I hang myself with the cord for that light?”

“Does the name Hokori Sadao mean anything to you?”

Taka squinted his eyes for a moment in thought before responding, wishing his hands weren’t shackled behind him right now. “He was a cousin of mine.”

“That’s what we thought. He was found dead a week ago when we raided a compound being used by the Poison Fist Syndicate. He had been working deep undercover for a year before going off the radar about the same time Sand went to war with the Suna no Soushuku. He had been found out, tortured, and killed. His resalable organs seemed to have been harvested.”

“That’s a pity. A lot of people liked him. What does he have to do with me?”

The woman got an expression of shocked anger on her face, her eyes closing tight. “You are a cold son of a bitch, aren’t you?”

Taka smiled, flashing his carved, jagged teeth before answering. “Listen, girly. I killed my kage because my bosses were afraid of the bogeyman. I am the definition of ice cold.”

“We both know you killed Nayoko because you were under orders you believed were in the best interest of Sand. You are an ice-cold killer, yes, but you are not as nihilistic as you would have the world believe.”

The smile left Taka’s face. “Back to this offer of yours and what it has to do with Sadao?”

“Yes. There is an entire village that would sooner see you brutally murdered than have it rain again, that is, if your crimes were enumerated to them. However, there are those who recognize your value. No matter how misguided, you are an amazingly valuable tool with the right hands in play. Nayoko’s murder is proof enough of that.”

“I’m waiting for your point.”

“My point is this: we can offer you a second chance. Serve Sand again as an assassin and soldier. Serve it as a shinobi. And reap the rewards. Do you remember what it was like to sit in Oda’s Tea Shop like you used to with your father, discussing your work and family, joking about work and talking about family matters? Do you remember what it was like to walk through the streets of Sand during the rare rainfall and feel the wet needles against your skin, watching the children of the village play in it as it fell and understanding what you were fighting for?”

It was Taka’s turn to look frustrated. It had been over seven years since he experienced any of that and he knew he missed it. But it was impossible. Hokori Taka was dead. He had died a hero. There was no coming back from the grave after as long as he had been done. “I do remember what that was like. But I can’t go back to that.”

“Oh, but you can. If you accept our offer, of course. Let me tell you about the Yagyou…”

************

Taka spit the mouthful of water out of his mouth, trying to get the minty paste out. He ran the cup under the tap one more time, bringing it to his mouth and swishing the warm water vigorously before spitting it out as well. Satisfied, he began clearing out all the paste residue from the basin before turning the water off. He picked the ends of the towel resting on his shoulders and used to vigorously dry his hair.

The Scorpion tossed the towel aside, not even looking, but knowing that it landed just right on the hook it had been hanging on earlier. He looked in the mirror, astounded at the changes. Taka ran his finger across his pearly white teeth, enjoying the fact that they weren’t the jagged row of knives that they had been. He ran his fingers through his blonde hair, enjoying the difference from the ink-black he had all his life. The assassin also took a moment to admire his slightly dusky skin, free from the scars that had caused his ‘death’, hidden under this new guise quite well. Most striking of all to Taka, however, were his eyes, no longer the steely grey, but now a verdant green. Nobody would ever guess who I really am.

“Sadao, come on! The kids are at my parents for the night. We have a lot of catching up to do!” The voice of Hokori Ibiko rang through into the bathroom from the adjoining bedroom. She had expressed several times just how much she had missed him and how she couldn’t wait to show it to him.

“We sure do,” Taka said, exiting the bathroom with a towel around his waist, smiling happily at the naked form of his late cousin’s—no, his—wife awaiting him on the bed.

He was going to enjoy this new life.

O:

Right, new guy, while I am sure you are being innocently harmless here, while in the process giving Kyzuko heartfelt praise, note that posting while having nothing of substance to say in direct relation of the approval process of a character is considered spam.

In a nutshell, kindly refrain from doing so again. D:

------------------------------------

Right, back to Kyz.

While I would like to say how much I love the set up and bio you have going here, I decided it is basically pointless.

Why?
