Physical Description: Fujioka Yasumi is a rather outwardly simple woman. She possesses straight, dark, waist-length hair that is often loosely held together with a tied cloth. Her large doe-like brown eyes suggest innocence and naivety, though some would say that such descriptions would not suit her.

Pale ivory skin, untouched by scarring and battle damage hints at her exceptional skills in the art of healing. The only mark she bears is a group of small tattooed flying seabirds (terns) on her back just below her neck. Her musculature would not imply a strictly physical training regimen as compared to other shinobi in her village. There aren’t a great many muscles rippling beneath her skin, but there are certainly a few feminine curves to catch the eye.

Clothing: Overall, Yasumi’s personal style is a little flashier than her natural appearance. She doesn’t often sport the traditional jounin shinobi garb of her village. In fact, it would even be difficult to spot her hitai-ite of the Hidden Mist Village. She prefers to adorn herself a red, sleeveless wrap top with white trim. The trim matches the large white obi tied around her waist. Her hitai-ite is cleverly tied within the bow of the obi, making the Mist shinobi symbol visible only from the behind. A katana protrudes from behind the Hidden Mist’s symbol at her back, held in place by the obi. Yasumi also uses this obi to conceal a good many objects, should they be needed on short notice, and the long tail ends of the cloth dangle freely from the knot. The hemline of her white shorts extends just a few inches beyond the length of the long red shirt. A small pouch is affixed to her left thigh, for other items not easily stowed within the folds of her obi. She wears black sandals, though not the common shinobi style. Hers are a little more feminine: strap sandals with a bit of heel height.

Personality: While Yasumi carries loyalty to her Village and comrades, she often has a personal agenda which serves as the root of the decisions in her life. Even as a child, her choice to become a shinobi was not one made in hopes of becoming strong and militant. She sought knowledge for her own purposes. She is selfish, but not to the point that she would ever sacrifice others to gain her own desires.

Yasumi has had a good many friends in her lifetime, though she has only truly trusted a handful of people. For those few, her loyalty and love cannot be matched. She would risk everything for them, and she believes with all her heart that they would do the same. Yasumi found that many people falsely befriend her to benefit from her medical skills. Over time she’s learned that true friendship is a rare and valuable gift. She does not bestow it lightly.

A fun-loving, playful woman, Yasumi’s good-humored teasing of others can be misconstrued at times, but she generally intends no harm. She’s developed a bit of arrogance over the years, likely a result of being in high demand as a healer. While she may come across as smug at times, there is no question that when things get serious, she will not deny her comrades the care they need.

Biography:
Fujioka Yasumi was not born destined to become a shinobi. In fact, there were none in her family and it was a profession not highly endorsed by her community, given the dangers and heartbreak always intertwined with it. She was born in a small village on the southern coast of the Land of Water’s largest island, though it was certainly more likely to be called a small cluster of homes rather than a village. Fishing and trade were the common concerns over everything else, and business was good. The first few years of Yasumi’s life were pleasant and simple. She hardly had a care in the world.

There came a time, however, when the peace of the girl’s life was disrupted. Her mother fell very ill when Yasumi was only 4 years of age. In the beginning, the illness was masked by pregnancy. As time passed however, Yasumi’s mother became increasingly ill. She was forced to remain in bed for the duration of the pregnancy, and the young girl stayed at her mother’s side, wishing there were something that she could do to help. The occasional doctor would visit, of course, noting that it was simply a very difficult pregnancy that was causing the problem. Once it was over, her mother was expected to return to normal.

As the day of the birth neared, Yasumi’s mother became very weak. Panic was in the eyes of her father as he took what little money the family had and left to find help in the Hidden Mist Village. It was said that they had the most advanced medical capabilities on the island. When he returned, labor had already begun, though it was taking a toll on the weak mother’s body. A medical-nin, the first Yasumi had ever seen, had come with her father to assess the situation. The shinobi was young, barely a teenager, but went to work immediately as if she had dealt with the situation a hundred times before. Yasumi was fascinated as she watched the girl tend to her task. Her hands appeared steady and perceptive as they moved over the woman on the bed, skillfully taking in all of the information she could about her patient.

The medic-nin’s brow furrowed as she considered the condition of the weak woman before her. She looked to the man standing by, nearly in tears over the condition of his wife. They left young Yasumi alone, holding her mother’s shaking hand as they discussed the situation in the next room. Yasumi continued placing cool, damp towels on her mother’s forehead, as it was all she new to do to make her even the slightest bit more comfortable. Tears began to streak her mother’s face, falling to the pillow as the minutes passed. When she turned her gaze to the wide-eyed Yasumi, she gave a faint smile, though the girl even at this young age could read the pain in her mother’s face. The four-year old would gladly have given up her life for her mother that day if she could.

Yasumi’s mother did not live through the night, though the medic-nin was able to save the baby. Yasumi’s father named his new infant daughter Kihomi. The small family struggled to move on, though they did receive assistance from the rest of their small community. It was apparent that Yasumi’s father was having an extremely difficult time dealing with his loss, as he spent more and more time at sea as the months passed. It was around Kihomi’s first birthday that things began to slide downhill further.

Kihomi began to show similar symptoms of illness like her mother had a year prior. Yasumi’s father was terrified, and didn’t have the money required to get help from a doctor this time. His panic turned to despair, and eventually he and his boat disappeared. He wasn’t seen in the small village again, rumored to have sacrificed himself to the sea. The community as a whole took in the orphaned girls, though Kihomi’s condition deteriorated quickly. It was decided that they would keep the child comfortable until her death, since not even the skilled shinobi of the Hidden Mist Village were able to save her mother from the same illness.

Yasumi kept watch over her little sister as she weakened, often playing games with her and telling her stories to keep her amused. It wasn’t until Kihomi looked at Yasumi the same way their mother had over a year before that the ambitious 5 year-old decided that she couldn’t watch another member of her family die this way. She would find a way to cure her sister herself.

Yasumi managed to climb in with some trade goods headed out from the small coastal community to the Hidden Mist Village. She sat for quite some time among freshly dead fish without making a sound, though she never could stomach the smell of it again after that. Upon reaching her destination, she slipped away unnoticed, taking advantage of the larger crowds found in the “big city.”

The young girl wandered around for quite some time before locating the hospital, where the dirty, smelly, 5 year-old stormed in. People adorned in white looked at her in confusion, as she demanded that they accompany her home to help her sister. They chuckled at the humorous little vagabond child asking them to teach her how to take care of sick people. What an imagination the little girl must have had.

Ultimately, Yasumi was unsuccessful in attaining any help from the snobbish medics in the hospital. She was escorted out and remained just outside the door, sobbing into her dirty sleeves. After a few minutes, she felt a hand on her shoulder. Once she wiped the tears from her eyes, she was shocked to see the very girl who had come out to assess her mother looking at her with a gentle smile on her face. She’d changed quite a bit in a year, wearing an official-looking vest and holding a file full of papers.

The medic-nin asked Yasumi what was wrong, and the child spilled all of her woes without a second thought. After several minutes of nonsensical babble, Yasumi began to calm down. She was relieved to find someone who would listen. She was heartbroken to find that this healer, Hisa, couldn’t help her sister, as the care she needed was beyond her medical skill. Unfortunately, at that moment the few medic-nin who could help were tied up with other tasks because demand for their time was high.

Yasumi responded emphatically that she would learn how to care for her sister herself and demanded that the Hisa tell her how it was done. The medic-nin merely chuckled and explained the long road of the shinobi. Yasumi was disappointed to hear how long it would take, but her determination even at that age began to show as she vowed to become the most skilled medic-nin in the Land of Water.

Of course, the people in her home village finally figured out where Yasumi had wandered off to, and attempted to bring her home. She put up a ridiculous fight, however, screaming at them that she would heal her sister and that she’d never go home until she’d learned how. After several failed attempts to keep her in the coastal village where she was born, her caregivers came together and scrounged enough resources to support her life in Kirigakure to become a shinobi.

Yasumi was thrilled to finally be able to start the long road ahead. The young girl was confident that she could impress the teachers with her abilities… that she thought she might have…somewhere…maybe. It wasn’t long before she realized that she had no earthly clue what was involved in becoming a shinobi. The other children in her class were well aware of what was going on already and many came from well-known shinobi families.

Ridiculed incessantly by her classmates for her obvious lack of knowledge in all things shinobi, the young girl nearly quit a number of times. Her thoughts always drifted back to her family, however, and that her sister was depending on her. Yasumi pushed forward, working as hard as she could to acquire the knowledge and skills she’d need for her future as a shinobi. She eventually began to develop and held a solid position in the middle of the graduating class, not the top performer, but not the worst either. She worked hard enough to graduate on time with the rest of her class, despite everyone’s (including her own) doubts.

After graduation, Yasumi was placed in a group with two boys. The rather large and intimidating Gounomono and the tactician Shimekiri had been assigned as her genin partners under the guiding hand of a kunoichi named Mai.

It was this teacher who impressed upon the young medic the importance of sword-play in any Mist-nin’s career. Though she had little desire to excel in the flashy fighting style of her sensei, Mai managed to help the girl along with the basics of fighting with a blade. While Yasumi’s style was much less showy, the young kunoichi slowly began to develop as a true swordswoman of Kirigakure.

While the young kunoichi wasn’t overly interested in her new teacher’s fighting style and interests, she came to love and respect the woman greatly. Her teammates were another story, however. She fought with them constantly at first, as children often do when trying to be the best at everything and finding out how little they actually know. After countless missions involving little more than menial busywork around the village, the trio of genin had actually become very close.

Luckily, she had these few people to turn to when she learned that her sister Kihomi had passed away. She had battled her illness for many years but couldn’t hold on any longer. Yasumi was devastated when she received the news. Without hesitation, her genin companions and her sensei traveled to her home village to support her at the funeral of her beloved sister, the last member of her small family.

It was a number of weeks before Yasumi was able to carry on and fully support her team again. She wavered in her will to continue the shinobi life due to her grief, but was talked out of quitting. Mai explained that her goal was still worth attaining, that many people of all walks of life would benefit from a great medic-nin, and that she could save some other poor child from losing what was left of his or her family. With the support of her team, Yasumi eventually found the strength to continue her life as a kunoichi.

After her loss, Yasumi worked hard to give her team the support that they had given her. They all continued to develop notable skills and became very successful with their missions. In celebration of their promotion from genin to chuunin, the trio got tattoos. Yasumi’s small group of four terns symbolized her family as well as her first (and greatest) shinobi team.

The team continued to succeed and began building a very good reputation. The team members began being pulled in different directions, as their skills were needed in separate tasks. Things progressed as expected of a young talented group of shinobi like Yasumi and her squad. There was one fateful assignment, however, that nearly cost one of the trio his life. It served also to open the kunoichi’s eyes to her true duties, and what was at stake if she were to fail.

The team was united for what was supposed to be a relatively routine assignment, should any mission be regarded as such. They were caught off guard by an extremely skilled and well-prepared shinobi, and they paid dearly for their inattentiveness. Chaos ensued as the trio of chuunin attempted to deal with the enemy. Teamwork was lost as they scrambled to do whatever they could to stay alive. Eventually they were able to dispatch the opponent, though Yasumi’s teammate Gounomono nearly lost his life. Using what little chakra she had remaining after the battle, she managed to stabilize him enough to bring him back to Kirigakure, where he spent a long time in recovery.

Yasumi personally watched over the medical care of her friend and teammate Gounomono, lending aid where she could and continuing to learn techniques along the way. Shimekiri went on to other missions and progressed well, though he often came back to the hospital to check in on their progress.

Oddly enough, it was the same medic-nin who came to assess her mother those many years ago who helped supervise the hospital, having become a very skilled jounin since then. Hisa was pleased to see that Yasumi had come so far and stuck with her dream, even after Kihomi had died. She took Yasumi under her wing and gave her in-depth training in the arts of medical ninjutsu. By the time her teammate was fully healed, she had grown substantially in skill, and was promoted to jounin herself.

The recent war events involving the Land of Water took quite a toll on the military forces of Kirigakure, and Yasumi’s team did not go untouched by its violence. It wasn’t until the team’s beloved leader Mai lost her life during a mission that the squad’s progress nearly stopped. It was a horrifying blow for the medic, as she had been there with her beloved teacher Mai in her final moments. She was unable to stop the inevitable, however, and Mai fell victim to the brutality of war. The remaining members of the team each took some time to recover from the loss, as they all had respected and loved their sensei. They managed to gather themselves and moved on, working harder and more efficiently than before, knowing it was what Mai would have wanted them to do.

As a result of her terrifying and devastating experience, Yasumi set a new goal for herself. She would never again watch a comrade fall. She promised herself that she’d become so adept in the shinobi arts that she’d never lose teammate on any mission.

Recently, Yasumi has been busy with missions as well as lending a hand at the hospital in Kirigakure. She strives to learn all she can about the human body and how to heal it. In her many years of training guided and inspired by Mai-sensei, the medic has become nearly as efficient with the blade of a sword as she is with the blade of a scalpel. She travels the Land of Water widely when she has free time and is granted leave, visiting small encampments and villages, doing whatever she can to prevent the situation that she had to endure when she was young, just like her sensei had envisioned.
