Default Mediocre Mist Chuunin: Kurusu Masato

Name:
Masato Kurusu
Age: 26
Sex: Male
Height: 5'11”

Character Type: Shinobi

Country/Village: Water Country/Hidden Mist
Rank: Chuunin
Division: Navy: Sailor

Physical Description
Every fiber of Masato's body seems to bristle with enourmous energy. When he speaks, it is always boldly and directly, with an air of absolute confidence. Masato will often use concise, aggressive gestures to hammer his point home. A sharp jawline, hawkish, slightly crooked nose, and pointed cheekbones cast Masato's face as gaunt and serious. And yet, his piercing gray eyes and his perpetual grin give him an aura of warm recklessness. His physique is that of a solidly built adult, although the continued mistakes of his youth display themselves on his skin through various bandages, scars, and bruises. Likewise, his carelessness reveals itself in the earth and grime which tends to accumulate on his person. Dirt, coagulated blood, unshaven stubble, and an occasional unpleasant odor are some frequent companions of Masato's, especially on days before his weekly bath. Although occasionally the light brown fuzz growing atop his head puts on an inch or two, Mastato viciously shaves it off every month to remain as bare as possible, perhaps in an effort to remain young-looking.

Clothing
Casually, Masato will throw on literally the first thing he grabs in the morning. Opting for as little clothing as possible, Masato frequently forgoes shoes or shirts, although at minimum he will have the decency to put on pants. His poor dressing habits extend to everything that isn't official shinobi business, and even during a spar Masato will opt for barely any armor despite the obvious risks of doing so. For 'official' business, Masato wears the basic Mist shinobi uniform, with the simple vest and shinobi sandals throw on with his grimy old pants, and wearing his forehead protector like a headband. It's apparent from his face that he is not comfortable when in uniform. His tetsubo is kept in place on his back when in uniform by a few belts which connect to the vest, and the tinier weapons he employs are all strung together along a kind of utility belt that will loosely hang around his waist. In casual settings he neglects wearing it, and most of the time he's off work Masato travels unarmed. In general, Masato looks more like a well fed bum than a soldier, and when in full uniform he seems even more awkward.

Personality
Masato's mind functions like a fire. His attitude shines bright constantly, his words can warm hearts or cause blood to boil, and under stress his mind flares up, seeking to consume and destroy every obstacle or barrier in his path. Like a flame, Masato's personality is an elemental absolute. His tremendously positive thinking doesn't grasp gray areas of morality or emotion, and he has trouble empathizing with people or reaching compromise in complicated situations. The unrelenting push for greater strength inclines him towards physical and mental burn-outs. When he is fiercely ablaze with passion, his reckless disregard puts everyone in danger. An undying optimist, Masato is blind to the flaws of himself and others. He holds thinking in contempt and loathes careful and deliberate action. However, he is not a stupid man, just a willfully ignorant one. Masato is not an inherently violent person, but his over-the-top passion, his penchant for brutal honesty, and his ferocious willpower have a tendency to cause those with shorter tempers to catch aflame as well. Masato constantly creates conflict inadvertently, and avoids diplomatic solutions because he honestly does enjoy clashing with others. Age is of no importance to Masato, who remains a child at heart. He continues to brazenly live in his fantasy world where bravado and determination can solve all problems, blissfully unaware of the reality of how the world works.

Biography:
Pre-academy, Masato lived an otherwise boring, useful life. One of the youngest of a large litter of children in a prosperous rural family, Masato spent his early childhood lost in the monotony of everyday farm chores. As a kid he behaved no differently from most boys his age, although he possessed a more over-the-top enthusiasm compared to his siblings. He began to grow taller and stronger as he aged, his mood never maturing along with him, and into adolescence he remained bright and cheerful.

Whether from stories he heard from his friends of the exploits and adventure of the Hidden Mist's shinobi or from a desire to break free from the monotony of rural life, something planted the seed of the ninja in Masato's young head. When he broached the subject, his parents became upset at the idea at first, perhaps more worried over losing a farmhand than a son. Eventually wave after wave of Masato's undaunted enthusiasm wore them down and they agreed to let him go to the shinobi academy in the big village under the condition that he come back once a year to help harvest, a condition which Masato has conveniently forgotten to honor for the last 12 years.

His academy years passed quickly, as he quickly grasped the fundamentals of chakra manipulation and combat. His general academics suffered, although he did put in an honest effort to learn all the pointless history and boring geography he needed in order to pass. Making friends came easy for Masato, as his excitability proved infectious to the other timid rookies who mistook his confidence as indicative of skill. Although he graduated with a grade tending towards the bottom of the class, to his friends he still seemed like an enormously charismatic shinobi prodigy destined for greater things.

His effectiveness as a fighter grew after succeeding his fights and being promoted to genin. Once assigned to a team he immediately fell into the role as the leader and front-liner. Unsurprisingly, the realization set in rather quickly for his teammates and friends that his fearless bravado created many more problems than they solved in the world of shinobi business. It was common during missions (especially covert ones) for Masato to blow cover, take unnecessary risks while fighting, and generally ignore every plan and idea of his teammates. Instead, although it lead to multiple mission failures, Masato favored “Let's jump out and wing it!” strategy. If anything else, this taught his teammates and even his jounin teacher to be adaptable when everything hits the fan. Masato, however, gained nothing from his genin years except more reinforcement of his “If I push hard enough I can do anything” philosophy.

When the time came to decide which genin might be promoted, paradoxically Masato was near the top of the list. Despite his insane detachment from the reality of shinobi work, he was actually decently skilled as a combatant and his constant tussles with thugs and low-lives gave him quite a breadth of combat experience. Not plagued by the crippling fear or uncertainty most genin have about their abilities, Masato improved rapidly in skill during these years and scored top marks in technique and mental ability. His major problem, as his jounin put it, was his “lack of discipline, maturity, and common sense,” also adding to the exam committee, “He is driving me crazy. Please get him out of my hair.”

Amazingly, he barely passed the all tests and was awarded a young promotion to chuunin as age 14, perhaps the highest point in Masato's life. The promotion would allow Masato to mature through assigning him more responsibilities, allowing him to grow into an excellent soldier with a good head on his shoulders. At least, the exam committee hoped this theory would be true. They vastly underestimated just how stubborn of a personality Masato possessed, as the next two years of mission failure would show.

Everything since has been one long, ugly, embarrassing history. Like in his genin years, Masato remained unrealistically positive and confident in his abilities, which frequently caused mission failures or conflicts with other members of the team he was assigned too. After a couple of years of reassignments, and a lengthy failure record, his superiors got fed up trying to deal with him and decided to put him where he'd do the least damage. Masato was assigned to a long-term Army mission guarding some pointless outpost on the far outskirts of Hidden Mist's territory, where he has since remained off and on for the last 10 years.

Utterly marginalized by the government, Masato never participated in the Water-Seagull Conflict and hasn't engaged in any heavy combat other than an occasional spar in the past decade. Although, after hearing about the war from a friend he did send in requests to join the front lines, his superiors told him his 'continued efforts to safeguard our borders are sufficient to the war effort at this time.' Even after the coup and continued political struggle, Masato's isolation on the far-out guard post insulated him from any real change in lifestyle. Though he receives bits and pieces of information on the Water Country's current state from the better informed genin or chuunin he occasionally works with, Masato willfully ignores having an opinion towards the new government because the whole thing is too complicated for him. Which is fitting, because the new government likewise ignores Masato, as they have not notified or contacted him at all in regards to reassignments.

Well into adulthood, Masato remains the optimistic and confident child he always has been. Masato doesn't see his position as trivial, though he's at a loss as to why he is never sent anymore exciting missions to go on. Occasionally he is allowed to go on simple jobs with in-training genin or chuunin, but normally he spends most his days uselessly watching the border or idly training/drinking.

Of course, when he occasionally goes out with his old, still alive friends, he's constantly reminded of their growth and statuses as successful shinobi. On the surface it doesn't bother him that most of his friends are jounin, but in the back of his mind lies a growing sense of inferiority and abandonment. As of now, he remains a low ranked chuunin with an unbelievably bright and passionate personality, shelved by the military and seen as just another mediocre shinobi who squandered his potential by being stubborn.

Writing Example:
Combined with the waning summer daylight, the overgrown path transformed a simple hike down a mountain into a menacing, hazard filled sobriety test . As if a grand prize awaited them at the bottom, two men plowed ferociously down the trail, each skillfully staying erect but with every step edging closer to learning a painful lesson in gravity. Whooping and shouting, the men tore through the air, and even the suffocatingly humid night atmosphere seemed to relent in the presence of such energetic souls. Of the two, the noisier, more obnoxious man flew madly across the steps, retaining a small lead over the much younger and less risky man. The finish line, a paved road at the base of the mountain, now in sight, the two men redoubled the speed of the crazed plunge down the mountainside. Every shout now another unintelligible cry of raw excitement.

Then, disaster. Mere seconds away from victory, a malicious weed ensnared the older man's foot, causing a moment of imbalance. Although the momentum tore the entire vine loose, the second of instability forced the man to lose his footing. Betrayed by his reckless speed, his body contorted and fell, slamming painfully into the rocky soil with a sickening thud. In a state of exhilaration, the younger man failed to take notice of this and gloriously retook the lead after passing the helplessly flailing older man. The younger closed the final gap with one magnificent leap from the path, his speed carrying him safely across the breadth of the last few meters to the safety of the paved road. He came to a slow stop, the adrenaline pumping madly through his veins. Although his heart and lungs heaved in protest, every nerve of the younger man's flesh felt excited. The sheer thrill of the race and the numbing effects of the alcohol consumed prior making coherent thought impossible. All that mattered was his victory.

Coming in a respectable second, the older man tumbled violently down the last few feet of the mountain and smashed into the soft bed of asphalt. Luckily, he landed in such a way that his right arm and skull absorbed most of the shock of the impact. This caused only minor discomfort, a few scratches, some bruising, a little bit of dislocation, multiple compound fractures, a concussion, and just a little bit of shame. Like the younger man, the older man slowed to a stop, albeit less gracefully and primarily with his face, finally managing to cease all motion and stop face-down in a dignified, sprawled-out manner.

Very nice first character, although the text makes my eyes want to bleed a bit. Hehe.
Quote:
Tactics: 1 -2(Daredevil) -1(Kobudo) +10(pool) = 7
Willpower: 1 +1(Daredevil) +8(pool) = 9
Tactics should total 8 by my calculations. Willpower should be 10.

Don't forget to review the Mist Village information and relate it to your character. Recent wars and governmental changes would likely have affected him in some manner, whether he chose to ignore it all or not.

I've fixed the stat hiccup and went ahead and nuked the font tags completely, since it looked messy when I was editing it.

I've added this paragraph to the Bio section.

Quote:

I wasn't sure what you meant by "affected", whether you meant something tangible like a rank/division/mission reassignment or something more along the lines of an emotional/personal effect of the war/coup. So I went with a kind of terribly vague cop-out answer. If this isn't sufficient, I'm willing to elaborate, rewrite, or gut portions of the bio to make the character relate more specifically to the current setting.

Sort of all of the above Junge. How it affected his choice of division, different missions he went on, and his emotional and personal developments as well as social relationships. How did he interact with people on the other side?

Oddly, I'm... very pleasantly surprised by this. Enough to give it a Half.
