Default Yamakazi Jirou [Stone Jounin]

"PHANTOM"

Name: Yamakazi Jirou
Codename: Phantom
Age: 21
Sex: Male
Height: 6"1
Character Type: Shinobi
Country/Village: Iwagakure, Tsuchi no Kuni
Rank: Jounin
Division: YARI Owl Cavalier - First Degree

Physical Description & Clothing:

Jirou is very skilled at making himself discreet among a crowd, blending in almost perfectly. He knows the importance and workings of stealth and implements each in his comings and goings. He has physical strength, though it is not his most specialized use of combat, and his muscles, yet formidable, are not well-defined.

His face is often shrouded or hidden by something, whether it be a hood, hat, or mask. Though if one were to look upon him, he would strike fear into a person by being revealed. He has a dark, crimson eyes that would give the impression of a bloodthirsty killer. Coupled with pale skin, and dark hair, many have believed that he is death itself in human form. They're not very far off. His countenance can at many times be or seem hostile, but most of the time they are at ease, indifferent. He is quick and quiet, and very easy to adapt. Skills that he had developed over the many years. He barely has many scars and marks on his body, as he almost always has under-armor to protect himself should his victim fight back

Jirou's dress code? Anything that doesn't catch your attention, and can often blend well. A black cloak seems to be a simple, easy choice in this way. Even on casual days, Jirou tries to remain discreet and unimportant, despite his reputation. Easily blend-able and less noticeable is the way that Jirou likes it. On rare occasions, Jirou also uses a grey mask with black markings. Useful for certain circumstances.

Personality:

At a glance, Jirou is a bloodthirsty, heartless killer whom would rip you apart in seconds. This isn't the case, but he often gives out an aura that says something like you-don't-want-to-mess-with-me. He can also act as if he was a different man very easily. So those whom Jirou trusts and had began friendships with are probably the only ones entrusted with the knowledge of who he is truly within. As a man of subtlety, Jirou can easily distinguish the hidden meanings or messages in things, making him impeccable in code-breaking and connecting the dots.

Jirou, however, is also a man whom is very self-conscious about everyone and everything. He can feel a person's eyes on him as if he were a specimen under a microscope. This has led him to faking his death and using a false name on several occasions, which have proved to effectively confuse enemies and allies. He does things for a reason, but he can go the extreme often. And many of times it can be death for the enemy, which in Jirou's book is a loosely held term. Trust is something that must be earned to Jirou, and even then allies can easily become enemies in a blink of an eye, or that's what Jirou has embedded deep within his own mind. This makes him always aware and sharp, paying attention to every little detail. Oftentimes these traits are coupled with cold and calculating, for that is exactly what Jirou does to an extent. Suspicious things, especially, are burned into his mind. Is he paranoid? Barely, just a little bit. But it has shown to be worth it in his trade of business. Heartless? Hardly, Jirou has emotions, and oftentimes he doesn't bother hiding them, ironic since that he bothers hiding everything else.

But of all things, there is one thing that is the most prevalent of Jirou's traits. Jirou is intimidating. He scares you, inside and out, and he knows it. Even more prominent than his ability to be subtle and find subtle things, Jirou is arguably one of the most chilling shinobi of Stone. And for good reason, too. Jirou has been renowned for his torture techniques, tearing the mind apart, and causing unbearable agony. He reaches into a persons mind and takes their most painful and suffering memories and use it against them. Most of times if a prisoner requires some extensive interrogation, Jirou is usually the man who they call up. Knowing the use of this skill makes him a deadly adversary. Even not during torture, Jirou looms over his enemies and gives them their worst nightmares. He sometimes sends "gifts" to his foes that could drive people mentally insane or scarred for life. Jirou is a card-player, he always obtains one of his opponents' most valuable cards and make them suffer for it. Jirou has everything planned, often going into hours upon hours planning everything out on a mission, from leaving the house to arriving home safely. These hours are spent predicting what exactly the enemy might do, mapping out as many options as possible, right down the most miniscule fight. Jirou likes to be prepared.

However, Jirou is loyal to his country, and has given a pledge to serve it. Jirou is not a prideful person, knowing that there is pride before the fall. He never forgets and can often develop grudges. Thus, Jirou isn't a guy you want as your enemy.

Biography:

"A monster among men. That's what they called him. And it is true that he had done a great deal of bad things. But someone had to do it, right?"

Early in his childhood, his parents were unhappy with their situation. They were perfectly capable of raising a child and both were honorable people of the shinobi status. But something strange occurred. They both disappeared. Some of the set few who know this information speculate ideas, such as abandonment, which led to more less-probable ideas like that even as a child Jirou intimidated his parents. Others don't bother, thinking that it was the parent's knowing something the rest of us didn't. A sudden enlightenment, perhaps, that should they be the parents of this child, it would become something destructive and abominable. Ironically, if this is what they thought, it was futile, for as if it was destiny, Jirou found his way into the ninja ranks.

Too young to understand what had happened, Jirou was left to a corrupt uncaring foster family of too many foster siblings in Jondori. He had not formed a particular attachment to his parents, who were never around, and because of his youth it was no loss to him. It was simply time to move on. The uncaring foster parents Jirou endured were no better, and not much worse. Jirou was not discontented by his situation, but rather kept quiet and learned. He learned it was the smartest who survived, who got through the day unscathed, and slept with a full stomach. Jirou even made small alliances among his "siblings" and began campaigns to get the best possible survival chances. Jirou was content. Eventually, the parents simply kicked the kids to the streets and Jirou was still immovable in his emotions. By now he knew what human nature was, and had come to perfect acceptance of it. He understood the situations people went through, he didn't blame his original parents neither his foster parents. He simply went on with life.

In the streets, Jirou found that life was no different from life under his foster parents. Then one day, he met a man, by the name of Miyagi Kai, and was taken in. No, he wasn't adopted. He was simply cared for in the Miyagi home. Here he was suddenly exposed to many religious theology and doctrine. Rather than take it in passionately, Jirou learned it as if it was a school subject. He learned out of interest, not belief. Despite much pressure to continue in fervent belief and religion, as well as taking part in many testing rituals, Jirou simply complied out of respect. Respect that they deserved, for they had kept Jirou dressed, on a full stomach, and educated.

A particular boy, by the name of Kanji, began a friendship with Jirou. Living in the same home and being around the same age made seeing and talking to each other as inevitable, evolving into a friendship, and eventually a brotherhood. No, Jirou was not a Miyagi, and it was not written in the papers neither performed ritually in the church. Rather he was the closest friend to the Miyagi family, and they treated him as if he were their own. Then one day, Kanji asked Jirou if he wanted to go enroll into the Academy with him. Jirou was enthralled by the shinobi, as Kanji's father was a shinobi and so were his parents. And so Jirou said yes and they became enlisted into the ranks of the Academy.

"I had once seen that man on the battlefield, and I don't sleep to this day."

The Academy for Jirou was interesting. He was intrigued on having begun actually directly learning survival skills for the first thing in his life, that gave him a more in-depth experience of survival. Sure, he had learned many things in his previous life, but that was all muscle memory and nothing tangible. He got to see things from a different view, before it was all instinct. He learned to analyze. He learned how to react to certain situations. His interest fueled his learning, unlike his religious studies which were less enthusiastic. And so his studies excelled.

His fellow classmates soon started to fear Jirou and for good reason. He performed everything with perfect efficiency. Why? Because he practiced every day. He enjoyed it. It seemed inhuman, but in truth it was dedication. Another reason for their fear was his ability to defeat others without them knowing, and at one moment they are winning, then suddenly it is all gone, as if the whole thing was an illusion. Of course in reality they weren't a big deal, but they were to the students. Their skills paled in complexity to Jirou's innovative ideas, and that made him special. And so graduation became inevitable as Jirou soon came to a genin team.

How did he like his genin team? He considered it to be just right. By a happy coincidence, Jirou was paired with Kanji as well as a new girl, whom Jirou and Kanji began a friendship. Very special among teams were that the three got along very well. After years of drifting away from Kanji, as Jirou chose the path of the shinobi, and Kanji still kept old religious traditions, Jirou decided to fill the gap that he had created. How did he do this? It was Maoko. The girl eventually came to grow to become the connection between the two ambitious boys. As it was clear both Kanji and Jirou had chosen a different destiny for themself, Maoko was always the one who kept people together, convincing Kanji to begin taking part in some of Jirou's common practices, and getting Jirou to accompany Kanji in gospel studies. They grew into something more than a team. They were best friends.

I hated him with a passion.

Katsushika Hokusai was a man of Stone that no one talked about. In the shinobi society, there were few that considered themselves his friends. So when the three young shinobi found this man as their leader, they found him as a very new face and one that they would one day never forget. Despite being a man that was not well-known at all, the man was very social and someone who wants to connect with people. The man connected with the team, not as a teacher to students, but as a friend to friend, and the team immediately liked him. However, he was never seen with family or friends. The three genin never realized this, as he talked so freely.

They did training sessions, missions, and even team leisure outings often just like any other team. But it was never awkward or had lack of conversation. He was a very good teacher. But the only one of the three that began to notice was Jirou. He realized he never saw Hokusai-sensei doing things in the village with other people, and he never saw him go to a house or such. It puzzled him, and as he threw questions towards the jounin on team outings, the only answer was silence. It was odd, but Jirou eventually stopped; it wasn't getting him anywhere. They never actually did anything really dangerous, but the genin didn't mind. They enjoyed it.

Until one day, Hokusai disappeared.

One day it was Hokusai, there were smiles, laughs, and jokes, just like any other day as a team. Then the next, it was a prim, boring man in his place. He did everything by the textbook, and Jirou hated him. He hated how there was nothing interesting about him. He hated how there was no creativity, whatsoever. He hated the routines, the schedules. He hated the drills, and he hated the harsh punishments. And most of all, he hated how he commanded the team as if they were his personal toys. There was no power, no respect, not even a single drop of love or compassion for the three young genin. The genin's quality deteriorated, and teamwork was scarce. It went on for about a month, when the genin began getting sick and tired of it. They wondered if Hokusai was ever going to come back.

It got worse, the boring, hardcore jounin began to not show up at practices, or even missions. The three genin were on their own while their jounin would send them nasty messages telling them what to do and how to do it for the missions he assigned to the three. And he began to purposely give the team more and more difficult and dangerous missions, whilst never showing up for any of them. One such mission included a heavily indebted man and lots of hostiles. Jirou, Kanji, and Maoko were the only shinobi supplied, three genin without any backup or reinforcements. It was a mission that should have never been assigned to the three, but as the they emerged victorious, if barely, each were promoted to chuunin.

"If a friend dies, then it's something of you who dies. Friendship is solitude delivered from the anguish of loneliness."

The beginning of chuuninhood threw Jirou into darkness. He became utterly alone, and for the first time in his life he actually cared. After many years of bonding with Kanji and Maoko, Jirou had become something other than the littlest child of a huge foster family fighting over food. He had become human. Being assigned the intelligence began a part of Jirou that swelled and dominated. The intelligence team he was assigned to gave Jirou the life skills that he would use for the rest of his shinobi career. Jirou learned, and he learned. Jirou looked inside of himself of many years of going undercover and found what he was good at, and he made these things better through practice and improvisation. It was in that team that Jirou first became known as the Phantom.

What was he doing? Infiltration, sabotage, torture, ambush, all that good stuff. Jirou was good at what he did, but a piece was missing. He was without his friends. He was sure, no doubt, that as he continued undercover, going deeper and deeper, that his friends were having a blast without him. And it put sorrow in his heart. Once he came back, he was never the same. There was a sadness within him; his friends made new friends, and he made friends as well, but the relationship wasn't the same if all you knew them by was their codename and fake identity. The village had put a barrier between Jirou and his old friends that could never be filled. Nothing could make up those lost years.

It was in the field that Jirou met one such fellow chuunin by the name of Itagaki Genma, and no, Jirou did not learn the boy's real name until after the mission. The boy was lost, having endured many traumatic experiences in his life. Jirou sympathized him, as he know that Genma was simply less lucky, Jirou was lucky enough to be taken in by Miyagi Kai. Thus they began a friendship. Their mission was to infiltrate a company suspected of smuggling. At first, Jirou and Genma were rivals, two chuunin in the rising company. Their acting was only half-acting, for they grew to despise each other internally. But when it came the time for the two to work together, they started a friendship. They began trading life stories. They were similar in situation. Genma was also utterly alone, however he had grown accustomed to it. Having been utterly alone since his father was revealed to be a serial killer, Genma had accepted his fate and became a cold, hardened boy. Jirou resolved that he would not have been much different had Kai not taken him in. So Jirou sought to connect with him, he related to Genma his story, having been abandoned, chewed up, and spat out. Jirou thought that he would one day introduce Miyagi Kai to him.

Jirou's final mission with his intelligence team was a shock mission, deploying the team as a response. The team had less experience with countering, most of the missions that they had done were done to infiltrate a rising organization or group. Other times it would be to secretly find or take down a certain individual. But each time it was the team on the offense. This time, they were on defense. Chika City was threatened by a group of pirates. Being the only available closest team to the area, Jirou's team was sent to protect the city. It was strange, as it was not the team's expertise by far, and they were outmatched in numbers. The point was not to arouse panic or disarray among the citizens or foreigners, so stealth was crucial. They stayed there for many weeks, and no ships came. And just as they were about to leave, there were reports of a raiding nearby town. Jirou knew something was wrong, but he also knew something was up. Jirou convinced Genma, and together they pressed the rest of the team to stay in Chika City. Reluctantly, they allowed the two to stay on post.

After a few days from when the rest of the team journeyed to the nearby town to investigate, that was when the two chuunin saw it. Black sails. Utterly without backup for a few days, the chuunin began to panick. They were outnumbered severely. After much debate and discussing, the two chuunin began to come back to their senses and formulated a plan. They rigged a defense system along the coast, including cannons and defensive ships. It was not enough to combat the pirates directly, but it kept the pirates at bay. All day, citizens would throw trash or other things into the water that would keep the ships from entering the port, or at least slow them down. It was a big risk, as traders could not leave the city, risking revolt or protest. It kept the pirates from entering the city for a few days, Jirou and Genma both using several tactics to further stall them (such as pretending to negotiate, or attempt to destroy some of the ships, at the least impairing them), enough to allow Jirou's team to return and dispatch the pirate fleet through destructive jutsu and skill.

When Jirou and Genma returned to Iwagakure, they were each given a promotion to jounin thanks for their brilliance and reaction to the situation, valiantly saving Chika City.

"Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment."

When Jirou came back, he heard about the Jondori earthquake. Maoko had already left to help those in need. Reuniting with Kanji after many years, Jirou was delighted to see him. But it was only shortlived, as they too were traveling to Jondori. Miyagi Kai was dead.

Dead. Jirou was ashamed. He had not visited the man since his early youth, and now he starting to feel sorry. Is this how you repay the man who saved your life? For what was probably the first time, Jirou had felt extreme sorrow and sadness. Maoko's older brother had also died, and it only added to Jirou's list of things he was sad for. As Jirou attended Kai's funeral, Jirou resolved that this was why he served his country. To prevent this from happening. To prevent people from turning into a cold, hardened people like Genma had been. To give the little boys like little Jirou a place to stay, to be loved. He would do these things. For the first time in years, Jirou began performing religious rituals in respect to Miyagi Kai. He would forever accompany Kanji in his prayers, in order to honor the man who could have turned the little shriveled boy away.

Following the earthquake was the aftermath, and not even Jirou predicted what happened next. The civilians of Jondori were mad. They felt as if the village gave no mind to all the non-shinobi and gave shinobi special rights. Though it was partially true, Jirou knew that there were shinobi that had tried all they could to help. Maoko being one of them. But Jirou shrugged it off, history simply occurred this way. There have been many times when this happened in history, it could not be helped. Jirou simply prepared himself for the dangers to come, he knew he was going to need it.

First, the writing is pretty good, but I think you may be trying a little too hard to sound sophisticated and it's actually getting a bit hard to read. So, you know, just be a little more careful.

As for the bio, a few points:

Jirou's shinobi parents abandon their baby in Jondori and then disappear. Are they going m-nin or just returning back to Iwa sans baby?

How did he get from Jondori to Iwa to go to the Academy? The village and the country are separate entities, so someone would need to make arrangements for him.

You mention past life muscle memory in the Academy; I think this either needs elaboration or just cut the line.

A chain around the port to keep out pirates? I really don't think that'd be possible as chuunin without serious metal ninjutsu.

Also, I would go back and talk to Nut, Tora, and Catlike. While most of your details line up, some things that are important here (personality changing sensei) are not even mentioned in the approved character, Tora's. I want to be sure that you guys have your story straight before any of you get further, to save us all some headaches.

Nope. Not missing nin. They are still a part of the village. Maybe they are retired somewhere, maybe they are still in work. But they are still a part of Tsuchi no Kuni. It's just nobody knows that they had a baby, and no one knows that they are Jirou's parents.

I didn't elaborate on this, but both Kanji and Jirou moved to Iwagakure together and lived together. If you read Kanji's sheet, then it goes into slightly more detail on the matter. If you want, I can elaborate, I just didn't want to be redudant and thus boring.

I guess I didn't say, but Jirou was involved in both the streets and a turbulent foster family involving big kids bullying little kids. Kids literally beating each other to the pulp for food and other things needed for survival. It gave Jirou a certain edge, an instinct. But maybe that's not good enough for you. No matter, I can easily take out that one sentence if you like.

I don't think I was clear, I mentioned my character rallying many civillians of the big city of Chika City to rig this thing. And there is still a chance that Genma himself may have metal ninjutsu among his arsenal. I think that is significant to create a chain that does indeed stop big ships as shown during the last battle of Constantinople and the Ottoman empire. Just in case someone tries to critisize me on that part.

Uhh, yeah, it's not one sensei, it's two. Our sensei gets replaced for unknown reason. A plotline to use in the future perhaps. Tora did not speak much of her genin years for unknown reason, but it does check up with Kanji's profile. I have already addressed it with Tora, she said she wanted to include more about her medic vs. normal ninja to make her biography less boring. But yeah.

Is that cleared up?

Yes, though the Constantinople chain, while an appreciated reference, would not really work well in this case. The chain worked for them because of the geography of the city. Chika is not a peninsula or a bay and wouldn't have the anchor points for a chain (or the time required to make one from when the sails were spotted and the city responded). I just don't think it fits.

Fixed to say that they put obstacles and other things in the water to slow the ships down, while rigging up cannons and other things. They also damaged some of the ships to buy them some time.
