Default [Stone Chuunin] Mitani Kouhei

Name: Mitani Kouhei
Age: 18
Sex: M
Height: 6’ 1”

Character Type:Shinobi

Country/Village: Iwagakure
Rank: Advanced Chuunin
Division: YAMA - Soldier

Physical Description: Kouhei is a fit young man with a build that would be considered fairly typical among trained shinobi. He is muscular, but not huge. He has only recently grown into his lanky form, and is still working out the kinks of… well, not being a clumsy teen oaf.

He keeps his dark hair relatively long, generally letting it do whatever it does naturally. If it falls into his eyes and obscures his vision, then he knows the time has come to cut it. His eyes are the shade of honey, staring at anything and everything with a youthful exuberance that belies his past and his status. Kouhei is pretty excited that he can grow anything on his face besides peach fuzz, so he tends to sport varying styles of facial hair just because he can.

Clothing: The wardrobe of Kouhei is generally defined by comfort. He prefers T-shirts and jeans to just about anything else, though he’s willing to wear just about anything necessary to get the job done.

He isn’t particularly flashy or gawdy, but he also isn’t color blind or slovenly. His attire is in good shape and fitted correctly, though it’s nothing that’s going to catch the eye of a fashionista. Kouhei prefers solid colors to patterns and typically dresses in layers in order to remain comfortable in any climate.

Precious little time is spent on Kouhei's wardrobe most of the time. Whatever is clean will work for him. The only thing that is places just so is his hitai-ate, which can usually be found tied around his neck, where the dangling fabric covers the strange stone planted between his shoulder blades.

Personality: Kouhei is an idiot. That is, of course, meant in the most positive way possible.

The young man is excitable and naïve. That… doesn’t sound much better.

Kouhei is a young shinobi with much to learn. Damn.

If there’s any one word that could describe this boy, it would be loyal. When the world has given up on him, he’ll press on as though unfazed by pain and heartbreak. He’s determined and fearless, ready to take on any enemy in the name of Stone. He’s a funny kid with confidence and goodwill to spare. His resilience to even the darkest situations is something that all shinobi should exhibit. Though he was expected to become a crazy person due to the influence of the jewel, not much has changed.

Oh, and he’s got no luck with the ladies because… well, he’s an idiot.

Kouhei was born to a family in Earth Country with old money. Several generations back, the hardworking family found success in mining, unearthing a fortune in precious metals and gems. Though the wealth and success continued and increased among the descendents in the family, humility and common sense remained. The Mitani family became somewhat well-known for philanthropy and hard work.

Eventually Kouhei was the firstborn son to an honest man of the family who had dreamed that someday he would follow in the footsteps of his forefathers and take over the family business. As the boy grew, it became more apparent that this would not be the case. Any time his father made an attempt to show the boy the ropes of his future career, the child couldn’t concentrate. Kouhei had no idea how much it hurt his father that he had no interest in continuing the family success.

The boy had a fascination only for violence and fighting. It wasn’t out of character for a boy his age, but any time he had a handful of gems freshly cut and ready to be set into fine jewelry, the boy tossed them one-by-one across the room like tiny shuriken. He was causing more damage around the workshop than he was helping, so a decision had to be made on his behalf. It was determined that once he had a taste of what shinobi training and work was really like, he’d yearn for the peaceful satisfaction of mining and jewelry creation.

Kouhei was sent to Iwagakure and enrolled in the academy there to learn some discipline, if nothing else. The family hoped that he would come to his senses and return home to a simple life of already established serenity and success.

As for Kouhei himself, he was thrilled with his new world of opportunities. He didn’t catch on to new techniques and movements as quickly as some of his classmates, but he enjoyed every moment of the work. It was a challenge unlike any other he’d ever experienced in his short life. Though he was sometimes made fun of for his slow understanding and clumsy reflexes, Kouhei made it through his training just fine. The longer he spent in the company of shinobi, the tighter the grip Iwagakure had on his heart. It was only a matter of time before he had a war with his father over his career choice.

So it came to pass that after Kouhei graduated from the academy, he became a genin and returned home for a short while. The boy’s father tried in vain to get the boy to focus on the family business, hoping to catch his eye with shiny metals and jewels that had made them rich. Kouhei couldn’t even pretend to find it interesting.

Spending time with his family again after so such a long time away had Kouhei viewing them in very a different light. His uncle in particular, seemed a little stranger than he remembered. His eyes were always locked Kouhei’s father at all times, though his brazen smile and kind words calmed most onlookers completely. The boy did mention his observations to his father once, but the elder Mitani became incredibly irate. Kouhei had never witnessed such a reaction from the man before, and he was careful to avoid questioning his uncle’s motives ever again.

The boy tried desperately to push his curiosity and vague suspicion out of his mind. It wasn’t long before he’d have to return to Iwagakure to work anyway. As the day neared for his return to shinobi life, tensions between the boy and his father rose higher than they ever had before. The boy was torn between staying and working with his father just to make him happy again or doing what he knew he was born to do.

Before Kouhei was forced to make his final decision, he was awoken in the night. A hooded figure stepped carefully into his childhood home, and it moved as though he knew what it was after and where it was going. Kouhei had a knife in-hand and was instinctively following after the intruder even before he realized that he was awake. The figure headed straight for a safe where Kouhei’s family kept their most precious jewels, and without a moment’s hesitation, the boy plunged his blade into the stranger’s back.

Kouhei killed his uncle.

The grief and anger that overwhelmed the house that day was something Kouhei could never have predicted or braced himself for. It was a whirlwind of rage and misunderstanding swept the boy from the home faster than any tsunami in history. His father in particular heard none of his explanation or pleading. The man’s heart was hardened at that moment and he uttered words that Kouhei still thinks of every day of his life.

“You’re no son of mine.”

In truth, the consequences were much harsher than they should have been. Kouhei was just a child, after all. He acted out of instinct to protect his father and his father’s achievements. In the end, he’d slain a family member. Despite being unable to identify him before the deed was done, the Mitani family banished him from the grounds. His ties and inheritance were cut.

It was one hell of a first kill.

Though Kouhei lost everyone he loved, the kid returned to Iwagakure and worked harder than ever. He put on his brave face and no one seemed to know the difference other than what weight rumors might carry. The boy had to move and keep better tabs on his expenditures once he was on his own, which some thought strange, but most figured it to merely be some sort of rebellious teenage antics. No one had any idea what the boy had done and been shamed out of his family for. No one knew the great weight of dishonor he carried on his shoulders.

It was his first jounin sensei that seemed to notice something was going on. Kouhei mumbled a lot in his sleep and seemed to be reliving his first kill night after night, even when out on missions. He managed to piece together all the clues after a few months of teaching Kouhei and it was his teacher that suggested his participation in a rather secretive program.

Kouhei was brought in for evaluation. He wasn’t informed of what was going on at the time, but his response was apparently favorable once he was informed that his participation in the program would benefit the village. He was deemed a good candidate for one jewel in particular. He had nothing to lose and nothing to live for aside from serving Stone, so it seemed an intriguing match. There was question, too, of whether opposite personalities of avatar and host could work together or if one would reject the other. He was selected for receipt of the green Force Jewel.

The implantation of the jewel between the boy’s shoulder blades went as smoothly as could be expected. It had been explained to Kouhei that he would likely experience some strange sights and sounds as a result of the jewel’s presence, but as the days passed, nothing seemed to have changed. Days turned to weeks and weeks turned to months. It was baffling that he hadn’t noticed anything unusual.

He doesn’t listen.

Once the jewel was implanted and Kouhei was studied for a time without notable results, he was allowed to go back and resume his work for Stone. The boy completed his missions, had a few missteps, and learned quite a bit more about what it took to become a powerful shinobi. His sights were set always ahead rather than the past, which is probably why he never seemed bothered by losing contact with his family or being implanted with a peculiar jewel. His sights were set so firmly ahead, though, that sometimes he forgot to think about what was going on in the present.

If he would have listened, it would have been much easier and required less hospital time.

Kouhei had never been the best shinobi, but he was average at the very least. What he lacked in skill, he often made up in resilience. Unfortunately, in the chuunin exams, that didn’t mean much. When put up against the world’s finest young shinobi, Kouhei was easily forgotten. He was thrilled to compete, though he came up well short of his goal of promotion. The boy merely shrugged his shoulders and went right back to work.

But why doesn’t he listen?!

He was preparing for his second attempt at the chuunin exams, but in the weeks before the tournament, the infamous earthquake of Jondori swallowed the city. Kouhei was sent out with hundreds of others to assist where they could, but there was little that could be done. He provided only a strong back to move the few rescued along with supplies to other cities. It was the best he could do, but in the end he made little impact for the benefit of Iwagakure.

The weeks that followed the great quake were tumultuous, to say the very least. Kouhei found himself verbally and physically assaulted by civilians of Stone Country on occasion. He didn’t really understand what was happening, but anger never got the better of him. He turned the other cheek and returned home each time without further incident. The boy was confused about how things seemed so peaceful in the village but outside its walls, they were under attack in the field.

If he’d only listen…

Shortly thereafter, Kouhei found himself in the middle of a fight while on his way to deliver a message to a contact just outside Chika City. He heard a commotion while en route, and his fearless nature led him to a scene where a fellow genin was being beaten and bludgeoned by a group of civilians. They hurled insults and rocks at the injured boy, who could only cower against the group. Kouhei, not knowing what to do, trusted his instincts (if only for a few moments) and unleashed an attack of a different element that had to have stemmed from the nearly forgotten Force Jewel. It wasn’t a dud after all.

Finally! Listen!

The element of surprise and difficult-to-detect assaults of wind from the green jewel helped Kouhei to surprise the assailants for long enough to grab his fellow Iwa-nin and flee the scene. He managed to get his injured comrade back to the village without further incident. Kouhei’s continued reliability, loyalty to the village, saving several fellow genin in similar situations in the months following the earthquake and ability to (finally) make the right decisions in the field eventually led to a promotion to chuunin.

The kid has been doing whatever he’s been assigned by the village. He’s still not great, but he’s not exactly useless, either. He is under surveillance for changes in his personality due to my presence, but the idiot doesn’t listen. I’ve gathered this whole story from his thoughts over the years we’ve been burdened with one another, but he still hasn’t opened his mind to hear me. The only time I’ve managed to be heard is when he’s got no idea what to do or he’s about to die.

I’ve tried speaking to him in dreams, but he thinks he just ate too much pizza before bed. I’ve tried to surface in his sight, but he just keeps getting his eyes checked. The kid believes he’s got a very loud conscience that tells him to do weird things, but that’s just me trying to kick-start his logic. It’s not working out very well for either of us.

One of these days, I’ll get through to him.
