Default Sanada Ayaka - Leaf Genin

Name: Sanada Ayaka
Age: 14
Sex: Female
Height: 5'4"

Character Type: Shinobi

Country/Village: Hi no Kuni/Konohagakure no Sato
Rank: Genin
Division: Hada

Appearance: Ayaka's flesh and blood have been honed to perfect fitness by her Celestial Body, but a perfect fourteen year old girl is still fourteen. She is lanky and tall with a healthy cushion of fat over her muscles that hides their definition. Adolescence has hit her height first and it shows; her face is marked by the smooth roundness of youth her frame has adopted the curving lines of adolescence. Her skin is pale and blemishless, smooth and soft, the callouses that are typical of taijutsu specialists only appearing when she needs them. Dark eyes sit in the middle of a round face framed by dark blue hair that falls just above Aya's shoulders that she will claim is dyed. Her voice is hoarse, quiet and almost as painful to listen to as speak with. So Ayaka usually doesn't.

While circumstances where Ayaka chooses to exercise her bloodline are rare she prefers to not have to worry about her clothing when it happens. Her shirt mirrors a sleeveless martial arts gi with long slashes down either side that reach the bottom of her rib cage, designed to be closed by wrapping the material around her upper body and tied with knots on her side and a sash about her waist. She wears a pair of gym shorts that stop mid-thigh under a long, hooded cloak. Her shinobi tools are hidden in pockets sewn into her cloak's interior. Her cloak is dark and her clothes are gray. For casualware Ayaka has a greater variety of clothes, most of them quite colorful.

Ayaka moves with careless grace, smoothly and without excess. Partially due to her birth and partially due to her training, Ayaka moves with a surety that is uncommon among children of her awkward age. Her stance is cool and aloof, expression hard and vaguely accusatory. She looks angry; angry and in control.

Personality: Ayaka's personality is loud for a near-mute. In the absence of words Ayaka chooses to convey her attitudes through exaggerated gestures and facial expressions rather than not be heard out at all. Her difficulties in readily communicating frustrate Ayaka terribly, because she has a lot to say. There is a great deal of pride in her, pride in her own ability and pride in the legacy of the Sanada. Ayaka is assured in her own competence and judgment and considers those who question her pigheaded and foolhardy. Ayaka is in friction with many of the Sanada elders for this reason.

All the same it's not her actions that Sanada elders object to, but her attitude. Ayaka believes in the power of secrecy and the danger of saying too much. Strangers' reactions to her abilities have taught her that discretion is often the better part of valor. She keeps her secrets close to her chest and carefully measures her peer's reactions to try to get a bead on how they would react. To her, knowledge of her bloodline should be—like many things—intimate and kept between good friends and family.

Inventory

Shade (Limb Armor (Legs), Limb Armor (Arms), Body Armor, Recall, Repair, Hidden) - 8
A heirloom from Ayaka's grandmother. Exactly what it is or who got it was forgotten when Masakage slaughtered those who remembered. 'Shade' is a black cloak, smooth, soft, full of pockets and just long enough for the person it is bonded too. Despite seeming like an ordinary cloak, Shade is reinforced by curious methods that make it as tough to break through as most armor. While Shade can be separated from its bonded partner they can recall it to their person with an easy thought. Shade has a self-restorative quality at all times; rips and tears in its material mend easily on their own.

Gills (Breathing Apparatus, Implanted) - 2
Ayaka’s biology is curious and strange, and her tendency to experiment with her body, while stifled, was never quite quenched. These gills, normally flush against her body and indistinguishable from skin, can flare up and out in the water, allowing for Ayaka to ‘breathe.’ These gills are located just below the rib cage on both of Aya’s sides.

Biography:

When the Sanada compound burned, most loyal to Seijin died, but a few did not. To Seijin a Sanada was a Sanada, strong or weak. But Masakage knew the more distant the relatives, the weaker their Celestial Body. Setsuko and her daughter Sayuri were the very furthest from his father's heritage, and so he sent a handful of men, assuming they would be easy to kill. Setsuko and her daughter might have had thinner blood but they were infinitely more practiced. The attackers died from their inexperience and Masakage's hubris. When the mother and daughter and emerged from their homes they found the head family’s home burning. They rushed to find Seijin dead and Masayuki nearly so. Setsuko and Sayuri carried Masayuki from the building before it collapsed on them. The pair and took him into the woods so that he could heal in sanctuary and watched over him.

Decades later, Sayuri gave birth to a little girl. She named her Ayaka. She was a wispy little dark-haired girl and got into and out of trouble with ease. Her grandmother said that little Ayaka had more talent than sense, and she was right in more ways than she was aware.

Ayaka was a throwback to a time before Setsuko, when their Celestial Bodies had blossomed earlier and more strongly; it was second nature to the girl in a way that echoed an older time and made those who remembered Masakage a little nervous. By fives years old she was already opening cans with hands like claws and showing her cousins the curious shapes she could coax her fingers into. Her personality had an edge, even then. Ayaka liked being better and she liked to advertise it to the rest of her family. Her mother and grandmother saw a problem but were not sure how to approach it, and so for a while they let it be.

They didn't wait long.

Ayaka had seen a teacher in the academy change their voice with a technique and wanted to imitate it. Nevermind the dangers of shifting her main body and nevermind that she had no practice, she was Sanada Ayaka and she would not be denied. She gathered her older brother Susumu as an audience and tried it. She mangled her vocal cords and closed her throat so no air could travel through.

She was turning blue and gulping soundlessly when her grandmother arrived. Setsuko wrapped her arms around her granddaughter and sank into her body and changed it as though it were her own. She opened the hole in Ayaka's throat . . . But kept the vocal cords as they were as proof of little Ayaka's recklessness until she learned to mend it on her own. Ayaka didn't so much as sharpen a fingernail for weeks. Susumu was her only ally; he pleaded on her behalf with every Sanada that could finish the mending, but Setsuko was well respected and closer to her in kin. They did not always approve, but all of those who could fix her throat respected her judgment.

Talkative Ayaka's voice was as good as torn from her throat. The focus of her peers and even her family slid away, and it didn't matter what she did, how obvious she tried to make it. When she did find the courage to change herself, she started with the most dramatic thing she could think of; her hair. The Sanada had black hair; her cousins and brothers and mother; everyone who bore the Celestial Body had black hair. While it had crippled her voice Ayaka had learned how to mold the body in ways that would not wear off, and she started again with her hair, made it bright blue. Her family was confused or outraged, depending on who it was, but they were acknowledging her, and that was all Ayaka wanted.

Prior to her accident, Ayaka’s attitude with her ‘peers’ in the academy was cool and distant—at home she had loved to showcase her talents, but in the academy she was scared off by stories from her mother and grandmother of people . . . Reacting. Ayaka did not want to be seen as a monster. While lacking the more spectacular advantages of her Celestial Body Ayaka made liberal use of her superior physique, relishing in throwing 'stronger' children on their backs.

Losing her ability to speak drove a deeper wedge between her and her peers. There were no stories that Ayaka could tell and her conversations could rarely be carried further than a word and a gesture. Frustration colored her every interaction with them and rumors colored her as an ill-tempered misfit because of it. Even if she had a problem with it, it wasn’t like she could correct them. Aside from a few other misfits that sat with her at lunch out of misplaced solidarity she breezed through without incident, never worth enough trouble to the other children to make a fuss over. Her instructors had no clue to the extent her Celestial Body had been developed, but they did see her martial prowess in the academy. For this reason they put her on the path to Hada.

She grew older and the situation in Leaf grew more precarious. The Hokage left unannounced and never returned. At home her family voiced doubts among themselves that shinobi whose families had been bound to the village for many lifetimes refused to as missions began to get fouler and politics grew murkier—who controlled a village without a kage? Who was behind it all? There were no answers and Ayaka hardened herself against the village. The sudden war, the appointment of a nobody kage and the betrayal of the ANBU . . . It seemed clear to her; Leaf had proven itself untrustworthy. Now was the time to circle the wagons and protect their own. Especially when information emerged linking them to Leaf’s enemies.

But of course Sanshiro couldn’t have that . . . Couldn’t burden his conscious with the thought that maybe Leaf wasn’t full of nice people who would give them the benefit of the doubt. She learned about the meeting with the older Sanada when her mother and grandmother came home from the meeting, certain that it would be better that Ayaka hear from them than the village grapevine. But it wasn't until later that Ayaka learned the full extent of Konohagakure's gratitude; she returned home from the academy seething with milk and bits of crumb in her hair. Of all the people who could speak, it had to be someone too stupid to know when to stay quiet . . .

She was not personally present for the invasion; Ayaka was still an academy student, and her grandmother took her into the basement under her guard, remembering their cousin's old grudge and fearing that the Sanada would come for them . . . Or that Konoha would come for them. For Ayaka it was little more than a very tense night.

The revelation of conspiracy that followed brought Ayaka only validation that she had been right about the village, and ANBU return to power only made her roll her eyes. Instead of having leaders that puppet-mastered horrible machinations behind the scenes, they were to be ruled by incompetents who had been tossed out of their own village by an overblown conspiracy that had flowered under them. In Ayaka's mind little had changed; Leaf couldn't and shouldn't be trusted.

The little Sanada graduated from the academy in an atmosphere of uncertain beginnings, under a shadow of a malevolent regime and under the thumb of leaders whose failures had helped the conspiracies, none of which Aya could talk about. Ayaka dreams of her own voice and freedom from the bounds of a society that chafes.

Other Info:
  • 14/33 AP Spent, 3/6 Jutsu, 11/27 Stats
  • When Ayaka was ten she was pulled temporarily from the academy, as her family didn't want any more attention drawn to the Sanada name for a while after Sanshiro won the chuunin exams by using his Celestial Body in front of onlookers.
  • Upon her return, Ayaka was instructed by Aramaki Tenzan. She considers him one of a handful of non-Sanada worth respect.

And now, we have Ayaka.

Kaen, you have long since been one of my favorite writers on Engi and I have actually learned a lot from you throughout the years. When you approached me with applying for the Sanada I was really ecstatic—until you told me you were applying with a Genin. My initial vision for the clan involved a lot of high stakes political intrigue and I was more than a little inclined to not approve any Genin on principle. I don’t care how good you are at writing coming of age stories, we are Sanada, we’re meant to be ridiculous.

And then you had to come through with such an interesting concept.

We’ve discussed Ayaka’s muteness before and the harshness of the punishment relative to the bloodline plenty, but even now that is what makes the character stand out the most. I’m a sucker for juxtaposition and the passionate, loud mouth—mute was enough to get me giddy. This character is very Sanada and I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with her. You were exceptionally respectful to lore while carving out your own little unique spin on Sanada culture in the process and I can dig it, I really can.

You outdid yourself with this one, I really enjoyed reading it, I was left intrigued with your concept…

And now I’m ready to read another Kaen coming of age tale :P.

No AP for you since you’re part of the Engi no 1% and richer than I can ever hope of being…

And also because Sanada GM Half Approval should be enough.

Thankya Buko. Since I moved this into clan reg on the sixth, I think it's high time for this to be . . . B-b-bumped.

I can't give half approvals or anything, but I did notice something in your stats since I caught drift of this in my late night lurking.

Quote:
Primary Archetype - Sanada Bloodline Specialist
Special: One Free Sanada Bloodline Swap
Primary: Chakra
Secondary: Physical
Tertiary: Mental
Merits: +1 Reserves, +1 Control, +1 Willpower
Flaws: -1 Speed, -1 Strength, -1 Stamina
Secondary Archetype - Cavalier
Stat Merit: +2 Speed, +1 Power
Stat Flaw: -2 Intelligence, -1 Reserves
Quote:
Power: 1+1S+1C+2=5
Control: 1+1S+4|+1|=6
Reserves: 1-1C+4=4
Essentially, you put an archetype point into Power instead of Reserves. So, Power should be 4, and Reserves should be 5. While that does make you ineligible for Jinsoku Gyouketsu, you could easy reshuffle some pool points to make it work. Similarly, your Control, with that AP makes it 7, not 6, so you could just move that over if you really wanted to. The rest of your stats check out, though! And I really look forward to seeing what you do with this character.

Wonky. I'll have to give past me a solid whack on the head. Thank you Wess, edited so that math no longer fails me, hopefully.

You know, you're supposed to only bump after the last post in your thread, not YOUR last post. I see your flagrant disregard for the rules and approve.

Half Approved.

Kaen Edit: Huh. That's the way I've been doing things for the last six years. Thanks for letting me know, then.

Oh yeah, I was surprised to see the character take up the Ekitai-Kenfu. Like always, your writing is solid. Here's another half approval for ya.
